Call number adjustment policy
for added copies, added locations, related editions, etc.

  1. Added copies:
    • Use the call number for copies already in the collection.
  1. Added locations:
    • Generally use the call number for locations already in BobCat.
    • If LC copy is now available (and existing BobCat copy is not LC-based), the new location should get the LC call number. The existing location(s) will not be reclassed.
    • If member copy is available and the call number varies, generally do not use the member-copy call number.
  1. Related editions:
    • Generally use the call number for existing edition(s) in the collection.
    • If LC copy is available for the new edition and the call number varies from existing editions, use the LC call number and do not reclass the other edition(s).
    • If member copy is available for the new edition and the call number varies, generally use the existing BobCat call number as the basis for the new edition.
  • Exceptions: some locations (e.g. IFA, Parsons) prefer call numbers in certain class numbers. If such a location is the first location on a record, it is not necessary to apply the matching criteria above. That is, use a member copy number if it seems more generally applicable.
  1. Recon:
    • Use the call number on the card. Do not adjust the cutter or add a date unless the cutter or date presents a shelflist problem. If the book is in hand and there is no record, the call number may be adjusted to current standards (i.e. match LC cutter if available and add date, if it fits in the shelflist).
