Stack Maintenance:
With over 2 million volumes on eight floors of open
book stacks, the stacks maintenance unit staff and
supervisors move over one million books a year. Each
day, staff pick up the materials used in the library
the day before and reshelve them, along with the materials
coming back through Circulation, and new materials
from the Technical Services Division. The in-house
use of materials accounts for half of the one million
volumes that are reshelved. In addition, the staff
is constantly shelf reading the stacks for accuracy
in call number order. The library's materials have
been catalogued in the Library of Congress classification
scheme, which clusters together materials with like
subject matter. The staff is responsible for the oversize
sections on th e floors. All of the full-time and
part-time staff have been trained in Preservation
and are experts in appropriate book handling. The
full-time staff has also been trained in BobCat searching,
so patrons with questions about the online catalog
may ask the staff working on the book stack floors
for assistance.
