BIOGRAPHY

There is no good, current biographical sources for U.S. labor leaders nor a thorough one for historical figures. Who Was Who and other standard biographical

sources fill some of this need, but yet the U.S. lacks multi volume sets like those for Great Britain and France. The call numbers reflect those in the Tamiment

Library and may not be applicable to your local library.

HD 8073 A1 A5 The American Labor Who's Who. New York: Hanford Press, 1925. This dictionary provides brief biographical information in the "Who's Who"

format for not only the U.S. but also abroad. There are four indexes: organization, occupation (which includes political prisoners), U.S., and international.

HD 8073 A1 B56 1984 Biographical Dictionary of American Labor. Westport: Greenwood Press, 1984. Edited by Gary M. Fink, this is an updated edition of

an earlier volume published in 1974. The 734 signed biographical sketches differ in two important ways from the other dictionaries on this list. In addition to

containing a great deal of useful information beyond the traditional brief format of the others it is also one of the few sources for information on deceased labor

leaders. The entries are evaluative and conclude with sources for further reading. A lengthy introduction provides not only the sources and methodology of the

book but also a great deal of statistical and other information on labor leaders, and a brief bibliography. There are several useful appendices: entries by union

affiliation, religious preference, place of birth, formal education, appointed and elected public offices, and an index. It does not provide access by ethnicity or

gender but these are the only major categories missing.

Z 7164 T7 C63 Cornell University. New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Library. A Preliminary Bibliography of American Labor Leader

Biographies. Ithaca: ILR, 1961 (mimeograph). A very handy, though dated, guide to biographies. Each entry contains birth and death dates (where available),

and union affiliation. The entries are not limited to monographs but also include articles from mass market media and entries in biographical dictionaries. There is

also an index to the entries by union.

HD 8073 A1 W5 Who's Who in Labor. New York: Arno Press, 1976. Created to update the entry below, this provides biographical information on individuals

"currently active in the labor movement." Arranged in the "Who's Who" format, it contains very succinct information on several thousand labor figures but is

sadly out of date. There is a capsule description of the AFL-CIO, national unions, government offices "serving" labor, labor studies centers, glossary of terms, a

bibliography of labor periodicals, and indexes to individuals by union and state.

HD 8073 A45 Who's Who in Labor; The Authorized Biographies
of the Men and Women Who Lead Labor in the United States and Canada and of those
Who Deal with Labor. New York: The Dryden Press, 1946. Another biographical
dictionary in the traditional Who's Who format. The biographical section is
divided into two sections: labor leaders, and people who deal with labor (government
commissioners, state government labor officials, etc). There are appendices
listing unions, labor press by state, union education directors, labor schools,
chronology of labor legislation, glossary of labor terms, and the constitutions
of the AFL and the CIO.
