CONTENTS: DICTIONARIES, ENCYCLOPEDIAS, GUIDES, &HANDBOOKS RESEARCH COLLECTIONS &REPOSITORIES Last Updated: 25 July 2002 by Peter Meyer Filardo (Archivist, Tamiment Library). URL: http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/tam/guides.html [top]Although this guide was initially developed to assist the patrons of the Tamiment Library at New York University (a special collection devoted to the history of U.S. radicalism, labor, and progressive social movements), it should be of use to all who are researching the subject of U.S. radicalism. The reference sources were selected in accord with the following understanding of the scope of the topic. Radicalism is understood as those movements and world views fundamentally opposed (from a left, as opposed to a right or conservative perspective) to capitalism as a social system, i.e., private ownership of the means of production and a state that supports it, and a belief in the possibility of replacing capitalism with another (more egalitarian) social system. Within this shared framework exist divergent views on the shortcomings of capitalism, the nature of the desired alternative social system, and the means to achieve it. While most radicals try to achieve their aims through activism, including (in some instances) revolution, a minority have withdrawn from the larger world to set up utopian communities. The major strains of radicalism have been anarchism, communism, socialism, and social democracy, and within each, there have been differing viewpoints and sectarian divisions. Marxist ideas have been a key influence, and Marxist terminology is an important component of radicalism’s specialized vocabulary. Radicalism has typically been international in outlook, and at times organizationally as well. Other social movements, or portions thereof have at times been significantly influenced by, or adopted radical perspectives, notably the New Left, ecology, feminist, and labor movements, as well as nationalist and national liberation movements. Although radicalism has been a less powerful force in the U.S. than in much of the rest of the world, it has played a significant role in the history of the U.S. from the latter nineteenth century to the present. Much of what is now considered part of the political center or basic to our understanding of the U.S. is a result of the (mediated) influence of radical ideas and activism. Indeed, in an overarching and global sense, this time period can be understood as the story of how capitalism has managed the social strains its development engenders and how it has responded to, and has been shaped by fundamental challenges from the left (and from the right). While at this time, the notion of a viable alternative to capitalism seems distant or quixotic, progressive activism and activists continue to be animated, in large measure, by radical anti-capitalist perspectives.
