Overview of the Pamphlet Collections

In her introduction to the Tamiment Library's Radical Pamphlet Literature collection on microfilm, former Tamiment Librarian Dorothy Swanson described pamphlets as ephemeral publications with value as raw research materials since "they are frequently the only authentic source that social and political scientists have for the study of the experiences of people on the fringes of society, as well as for the formal study of political and economic progress."

Pamphlets in the Tamiment Library's collections include thousands of titles in print and on microform. Subject coverage spans the role of women in socialism and in the labor force, civil rights, labor union strikes, the Sacco-Vanzetti case, trade unionism, anti-Semitism, the Scottsboro case, the McCarthy Era, anarchism, communism, socialism, radicalism, and other topics. The pamphlets are arranged in either distinct thematic collections or in the general pamphlet collection. The majority of the pamphlets are not cataloged individually. Descriptions of the various collections below indicate the level of access available.

Abraham Lincoln Brigade Pamphlet Collection

This collection consists of more than 300 pamphlets on various topics related to the Spanish Civil War and the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. These ALBA pamphlets have been cataloged at the item level in BobCat, and may be found with an author, title, or subject search. Call numbers for the ALBA pamphlets begin with "PAMALBA."

To search for individually cataloged ALBA pamphlets, choose the Advanced search option in BobCat. Then choose "Call Number" from the drop down menu in the first box. Leave "Contains" in the second box and type "PAMALBA" in the third box. Click on "Go" to find results. Then, refine search results by choosing from the options under Subject, Author/Creator, Language, Call Number Group, Genre, and Publication Date on the left side of the screen.

To browse the ALBA titles by pamphlet call number, click on the link for BobCat Standard in BobCat, choose the Call Number index from the drop down menu under "Browse an Alphabetical List of" and type the collection prefix "PAMALBA" in the "Beginning with" box. You will then see a list of all the cataloged ALBA pamphlets beginning with PAMALBA 1.

Communist Pamphlets. Radical Pamphlets in American Collections. Part 2 (microfiche)

The collection consists of 1,245 titles from the Labadie Collection, University of Michigan. ProQuest, the publisher of this set, describes the collection as follows: "Like most radical political groups, the Communist Party of the United States relied heavily on pamphlets both to educate members about its policies and to present its views to the general public. The Party and its front organizations issued thousands of pamphlets on every conceivable topic ranging from Communist relations with the church and interpretations of American history to transcripts of meetings of the Communist International and accounts of what a Soviet America would look like. Some pamphlets were produced to rally activists for a particular protest demonstration, others contained important theoretical pronouncements from Soviet leaders." Tamiment Call #: Microfiche 83. A published guide to the microfiche set contains a title list of the pamphlets in the collection. There is no author or subject access to the set. The guide is available in the Tamiment Library's reference collection, shelved at HN 90 .R3 R33 Pt. 2.

It therefore provides much invaluable source material on the history of Communist and left-wing ideas and activity over the last 50 years. 53 reels of microfilm. The guide is available in the Tamiment Library's reference collection, shelved at HN 90 .R3 R33 Pt. 3.

Radical Pamphlet Literature (microfilm)

The collection of 8,762 pamphlets was assembled by the Rand School of Social Science, now New York University's Tamiment Library. The greater portion of the material appeared between 1900 and 1945. The focus of the collection is the pamphlets and leaflets issued by the Socialist Labor Party, Socialist Party, League for Industrial Democracy and the Communist Party, but there are also many pamphlets issued by anarchist groups, Trotskyists and labor organizations.

Pamphlets are arranged alphabetically by author in a numbered sequence on 89 reels of microfilm and accompanied by a published guide. Approximately 2,000 of the pamphlets in the collection have been cataloged in BobCat and may be found by an author, title, or subject search.

Researchers should consult the published guide to find uncatataloged pamphlets in the collection. The guide offers author access only; there is no title or subject access to the uncataloged pamphlets using the guide. A card catalog available in the reading room provides limited subject access to these pamphlets. Microfilm Call #s: Film R-1743 to Film R-1831. Microfilm Guide Call #: Tam Ref HN 90 .R3 T323.
