| This is a guide to materials on Yiddish-speaking labor and
radical movements in the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives
at New York University. It provides a selected listing of books in English
on the Yiddish-speaking labor and radical movements in Europe and the United
States. It provides a more complete listing of Tamiment's Yiddish-language
holdings in order to facilitate researchers' efforts to browse a category
not easily searchable in library catalogs using standard methods.
A Note About Transliteration: Yiddish titles appear in English transliteration.
As much as possible, recentlycomposed transliteration follows the
system established by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. However,
some transliteration in this guide does not employ the YIVO system. Inconsistent
transliteration stems from several factors. First, the YIVO system became
widely accepted only recently, after many libraries began cataloging Yiddish
books. Related to this is the fact that many organizations and publications
began using transliterations of their names in addition to their Yiddish
names rather early on. Thus several names became familiar to Englishspeaking
audiences in alternative transliterations (e.g., Freie Arbeiter Shtime,
rather than Fraye Arebeter Shtime). As well, inconsistent transliteration
stems from the nonstandard Yiddish used by the authors themselves.
