Collections on Microfilm and Microfiche

Overview

The Tamiment Library holds more than 10,000 reels of microfilm and thousands of microfiche. Holdings consist of archival collections, newspapers and other serials, books, government documents, pamphlets, labor union minutes and conference proceedings, oral history transcripts, dissertations, and masters theses.

All of the collections on microfilm and some of the collections on microfiche have been cataloged in BobCat, NYU's library catalog. To find cataloged materials, search by author, title, subject, or call number.

You may browse the microfilm holdings by call number in BobCat Standard. With the exception of the Radical Pamphlet Literature collection, call numbers for Tamiment's microfilm holdings begin with the prefix "Film R-" with numbering beginning at 7000. To see a numerical list of all of the collections, search BobCat standard with "Film R-7000" in the Call Number field.

You may also browse the microfiche holdings by call number in BobCat Standard. Search BobCat standard with "MICRO" in the Call Number field.

Archival Collections

Archival collections on microfilm and microfiche include filmed editions of personal papers and organizational records owned by the Tamiment Library as well as commercially produced microfilm sets of archival materials owned by other libraries.

Most are accompanied by either electronic finding aids or printed microfilm reel guides. Reel guides are shelved together in the Tamiment Library's reading room on the reference shelves. Reel guides are distinguished with red tape on their spines.

Notes in archival finding aids and on the collections list/finding aids list and holdings statements in BobCat records indicate the availability of microfilm.

Books, Dissertations, Masters Theses

Search for cataloged books, reports, dissertations, and masters theses on microfilm and microfiche by author, title, or subject in BobCat, NYU's library catalog.

Since not all of the library's microfiche holdings have been cataloged to date, consult pdf lists of collection on microfiche sorted by collection number or sorted by title to see what's available in Tamiment.

Newspapers and Other Periodicals

The Tamiment Library holds more than 1,100 individual serials titles on microfilm. Some of the serials on microfilm duplicate print issues while other serials are only available on microfilm in the Tamiment Library. Microfilm is cataloged in BobCat beginning with the call number "Film R-7xxx."

A checklist of serials on microfilm is available as a pdf file showing titles with date range, publisher, number of reels, and call number. Consult BobCat for complete holdings information.

Underground Press Collections

In addition to the serials on microfilm cataloged at the title level, Tamiment holds three related alternative press collections on microfilm that contain hundreds of additional serials titles. These periodicals are a valuable record of radical thought and counter-culture opinion and are relevant to the study of history, education, literature, journalism, sociology, law, psychology, and other subjects.

These microfilm collections have been cataloged at the collection level in BobCat; only a few of the titles have been cataloged individual title level. Each of the collections is accompanied by a published guide that provides access to the contents of the reels.

The main Underground Press Collection (Tamiment Call #: Film R-7001), consists of over 550 newspapers dating from 1963 to 1985. (476 reels)

The Hoover Supplement (Tamiment Call #: Film R-7002) was added to the Underground Press Collections in 1988. Filmed from holdings in the newspaper archives at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University, the supplement contains 266 titles. These include 88 missing issues from UMI's original collection and 178 additional titles. Publications in the Hoover Supplement reflect various perspectives of the late '60s and '70s. (16 microfilm reels)

The University of Missouri--Columbia Supplement UMI (Tamiment Call #: Film R-7003) was filmed at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, which is recognized as one of the leading journalism schools in the country. This collection contains 123 titles from the early 1960s through the late 1970s. (9 microfilm reels)

Search BobCat under Call Number: "Film R-7001," "Film R-7002," or "Film R-7003" to see catalog records for the collections and their accompanying guides or click the links above.

Pamphlets

Tamiment's collections include tens of thousands of pamphlets. Many of those titles may be found in commercially produced microfilm sets, including:

  • Anarchist Pamphlets, 1830-1935 (Labadie Collection)
  • Communist Pamphlets (Labadie Collection)
  • Communist Party of Great Britain Pamphlets, 1820-1991
  • House Un-American Activities Committee Pamphlets Collection (Library of Congress)
  • Radical Pamphlet Literature (Tamiment Library)
  • 20th Century Political Pamphlets (Tamiment, Cornell, SUNY Buffalo, and SUNY Albany)
  • Pamphlets from the New York Public Library's collections

See our Pamphlet Collections Research Guide for full details.

Using Microfilm & Microfiche

Request microfilm reels and microfiche by filling out one call slip per collection title at the Tamiment Library's reference desk.

There are two microfilm/microfiche machines in our reading room. With each of them researchers may read microfilm, print pages (for a per page fee of 15 cents using a value-added card), scan images to a flash drive or CD (CDs are available for sale in the reading room for $1 each), or email images from the microfilm (no charge).

Microfilm reels may be available via interlibrary loan, arranged through remote libraries and NYU Libraries' Interlibrary Loan Department.
