The third recipient of the Frederic Ewen Academic Freedom Fellowship, Phillip Deery is Professor of History at Victoria University, Melbourne. He has published extensively on different aspects of the Cold War and is currently co-authoring a book on espionage during the early Cold War. The project on which he will work in the spring semester of 2009 is entitled Diluting Democracy: Academic and political freedom in Cold War America . Although it focuses on threats to these freedoms in the McCarthyist period, it also has contemporary relevance to current debates concerning the defense of academic freedom in the modern age.
