Jewish Labor Committee Photographs Finding Aid

Jewish Labor Committee Photographs, Tamiment Library, New York University

Appendix 2. Caption List

This is a list of translations for Yiddish captions (amounting to more than 1,700 images in the collection), prepared by Daniel Soyer in 1994. [NOTE: This list was scanned in from printed document and may contain a number of errors; it may be edited at some point in the future. Consult archivist on this point.]

Note: How to Use the Caption List

The list is most easily used when researchers browsing through the photographs encounter a caption in Yiddish. They then should look for a caption translation number on the upper right-hand corner of the back of the photograph and look up this number in the list for an English translation. (A different number in the upper left-hand corner of each photograph identifies the photograph itself, not the caption. For purposes of caption translation this number should be ignored.) It is possible, but much more difficult, to use the the caption list the opposite way--that is, to consult it first and then attempt to find an image labeled with the caption one is seeking. The problem arises because the caption list was assembled before processing of the collection was complete, and therefore many of the folder titles referred to in the list no longer exist and the locations within boxes (box numbers) have been changed since the caption list was compiled.

[back of photo] I enclose my picture. Maybe Comrade Iser Goldberg or one of the other comrades will remember me. Regards, A. Bartshom. [Attached letter] Brussels, March 30. Esteemed comrades of the Labor Committee in America. I, a member of the Bund from Warsaw, appeal to you to help me in the desperate situation in which my family and I find ourselves in Belgium. I will briefly tell you my life story. In 1939 I fled the Germans in Warsaw with my family. I settled in White Russia in a town near Bialystok, Tsekhanovits. In 1940 the Russians offered me Russian citizenship, but I refused it. They therefore sent me and my family to the forests of Archangelsk, where I worked with other Jews in 1941 until the war with the Germans. There I met our comrade Victor Alter who was working on the committee to help the refugees. From there we were sent to Asia, where we worked in the kolkhozi until 1943. Then the Russians mobilized us into a Polish army. I was at the front, and in 1944 was wounded near Warsaw. At the end o

The cooperative was created by the member printers, following an initiative of the Brith Avodah in Israel, with the assistance of the Jewish Labor Committee and the Center for Cooperation. The members are new immigrants, mostly older people who were unable to find work. At first, the cooperative experienced hard times because it had to buy several new machines, and also because it lacked investment capital. Over time the situation stabilized. The cooperative now undertakes jobs, mostly books and periodicals in various languages: Yiddish, Hebrew, Polish, English. It has been able to attract a stable clientele because of the precision of its work. The cooperative prints a number of publications put out by the Histadrut and the Center for Cooperation. In recent years, the cooperative has printed both the monthly orga

[Clipping] From Letste nayes, April 4, 1968. A Dramatic Studio - An Example for the Theater/"Be a Jew" in the Production by the Drama Club of the "Arbeter Ring"/ The drama club of the "Workmen's Circle" in Tel Aviv has now been active for ten years, and it has already made an important place for itself in the cultural and theatrical life of the city. In this time, the members of the circle - working people who carry out their volunteer cultural work with much devotion - have produced a great number of plays from the better repertoire of the Yiddish theater. t The current production is a version of "Yankl Boyle" by Leon Kobrin. A classic of the Yiddish theater, it tells the story of a young country Jew who is torn between religious Judaism and his love for a gentile girl.] With this presentation, the dramatic club of the "Arbeter Ring"...can serve as a good example for the country's professional theater troupes. It would be worthwhile for this play to be performed elsewhere besides Tel Aviv.

[Clipping] A Beacon in the Dark/Dluzhnovski's "The Lonely Ship" Performed by the Dramatic Ensemble of the "Arbeter Ring" t The writer notes the difficulty of performing plays with a "high degree of dramatic tension," as evidenced by the recent failure of a play performed by Habimah. The production by the Arbeter Ring theatrical group is a success, despite the limitations inherent in an amateur production. The play deals with the moral dilemma of the French captain of a ship full of Jewish refugees when faced with a German submarine's demand that he turn over a particular passenger wanted by the Germans. Should he turn the man over, or should he risk the destruction of the entire ship?] In envelope marked in English "Children's Yiddish afternoon schools in Israel," and in Yiddish "Arbeter Ring, Tel Aviv, Israel."

[Letter on letterhead of the Vladeck Preventorium of the Arbeter Ring, Brunoy] Brunoy, May 29, 1948. My dear Tabatshinski, Yesterday I sent you a package of superb photos which it seem to me fully reflect how life appears here in the Vladeck Home. I am interested to know how you will find the records; whether they will make the appropriate impression. How do you find the song, "My Name is Yisrolik"? I understand that one might think that an adult is singing. I am therefore sending you a picture of the girl. She is here in the Vladeck Home, is all of 15 years old, and is the daughter of a teacher who works in the Vladeck Home. I believe that song will make an impression. I await, therefore, a couple of words from you with your opinion about the photos and the records. Best wishes, yours, G. Zaltsman. P.S. I am waiting impatiently for an answer to my private letter to you. Time flies. I must get oriented. I also need to know what to say to the local comrades. G.Z.

[Letter attached to photos 1174-1177, from Alexander of the Friends of Children to Lazar Epstein.] Alexander responds to a request from the JLC for photos of children to be "adopted." He writes that the surviving parents and relatives of the children have not been forthcoming since they are suspicious of the request, having given photos before without the expected results. The father, a poor tailor, has already amassed a heavy debt to pay for doctors and operations, which he cannot pay. Regarding the photos, Alexander writes as follows: 1. Dinele Heler is the youngest pupil in the school. Her father was taken by the Nazis. Her mother has a little store selling "a bagel here, a herring there." It is a
