English and American Literature

RG#5

This guide will be helpful to undergraduate English majors and to graduate students doing projects requiring extensive research. Also see Bobst Research Guide 19, "Literary Criticism," for resources on critical analysis of literary works. You may connect into any of the resources below listed as having Electronic Access by way of the alphabetical database list at http://library.nyu.edu/collections/find_articles_title.html.

This Guide Contains Information on:

1. Current Bibliographies

  • MLA International Bibliography of Books and Articles on the Modern Languages and Literatures.
    Bobst Reference 1 Z7006.M64, 1921 to 1962 (annual)
Electronic Access, 1963 to date (updated 10 times per year)

This is the most thorough single listing of research on literature, covering books and articles in journals and in certain books. It does not list book reviews, or chapters in books.

  • Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature.
Electronic Access via Literature Online, 1920 to date (updated monthly)

Covers research on literature in English, world-wide. Slower to be indexed than the MLA Bibliography, but a useful supplement to it because it may list references omitted from the MLA. A number of items published between 1892 and 1919 have been indexed retrospectively. Sometimes called "the MHRA bibliography" or "ABELL." Can be accessed via the "Criticism & Reference" link on Literature Online's main page. Once on Literature Online's "Criticism & Reference" page, change your search to "Criticism" by clicking the "Criticism" link, then choose "ABELL search" in the "Criticism options."

  • Humanities Index.
Electronic Access via Wilson's OmniFile Full Text Mega, 1984 to date (updated daily)
Electronic Access via Wilson's Humanities & Social Sciences Retrospective Index, 1972 to 1984

At present this covers nearly 350 journals, many of which are entirely or in part devoted to literature.

  • Index to Book Reviews in the Humanities.
    Bobst Z1219.I7 (Stacks), 1960 to 1990 (annual)

Includes reviews of literature and criticism.

  • Arts and Humanities Citation Index.
Electronic Access via Web of Science, 1975 to date (updated weekly)

This very useful index will give access to many studies not to be found in the MLA.

  • "Annual Bibliography of Commonwealth Literature [year]" in The Journal of Commonwealth Literature.
Bobst PR1.J67 (Stacks) and Current Periodicals (3rd Floor), 1965 to date (annual)
Electronic Access, 2000 to date (annual)

Lists literary works as well as studies in regional journals and critical books. Each section opens with a review essay. Appears in the last issue of each volume.

2. Cumulative Bibliographies

  • New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. 4 vols and index vol. Cambridge: the University Pr., 1969-1977.
    Bobst Reference 1 Z2011.N45 1969

Covers the literatures of the British Isles from 600 to 1950. The Index volume lists the subject sections and sub-sections of the bibliography, but not the subject of each study.

  • Leary, Lewis G. Articles on American Literature, 1968-1975. Durham, NC: Duke Univ. Pr., 1979.
    Bobst Reference 1 Z1225.L493x

Lists by author & by some broad topics (e.g., Humor, Regionalism). Earlier volumes cover 1900-1950 and 1950-1967.

  • New, William H. Critical Writings on Commonwealth Literatures: A Selective Bibliography to 1970. University Park: Pennsylvania St. U. Pr., 1975.
    Bobst Reference 1 Z2000.9.N48

3. Annual Reviews of Research

  • The Year's Work in English Studies.
Bobst Reference 1 PR5.E6, 1919 to date (annual)
Electronic Access, 1996 to date (annual)

A collection of essays describing and commenting on recent books and articles. There have been chapters on American literature since volume 35 (1954) and on the Commonwealth literatures since 63 (1982).

  • American Literary Scholarship: An Annual.
    Bobst Reference 1 PS3.A47, 1963 to date
Electronic Access via Project Muse, 1998 to date

Essays describe and summarize research since 1963 on periods of American literature or on major writers.

4. Bibliographies of Research on an Author

There are many book-length bibliographies listing studies of a certain author. To find these, search in BobCat or the library's card catalog by the author's name as the subject (with dates), followed by the word "Bibliography". For instance, in BobCat under the subject search:

S=Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616 -- Bibliography

you will find the following very useful bibliography:

  • Champion, Larry S. The Essential Shakespeare: An Annotated Bibliography of Major Modern Studies. 2nd ed. Boston: Hall, 1993.
    Bobst Reference 1 Z8811.C53 1993

Annotated list of books and articles, arranged by play, with a limited subject index.

5. Important Electronic Resources

  • CLC Select: Contemporary Literary Criticism
