Robins_Papers_Series_Eight_Description
Size: 1 foot, 6 inches (includes 1 oversize box)
Form: Contracts, business records, set sketches, prompt copies (manuscript, typescript and printed), correspondence

Arranged in two subseries; alphabetical, primarily by play title, within each subseries:
Subseries A: Business Records
Subseries B: Prompt copies and annotated typescripts

This series reflects Elizabeth Robins's interest in non-profit theater and Ibsen dramas. With the exception of the acting contracts dating from 1883, when Robins was living in America, and a prompt copy for The King's Pleasure, the materials in this series relate to her theater experiences in England. [For information on Robins's American acting career see Series One: Diaries; Series Two: General Correspondence; Series Three: Robins Family Papers, especially Elizabeth Robins's correspondence with Jane H. Robins, Charles E. Robins and Hannah M. Robins; Series Nine: Photographic Materials, which has pictures of Elizabeth Robins and many of her colleagues in dramatic roles; Series Eleven: Scrapbooks and Series Twelve: Printed Material.]

Subseries A contains business records from the period when Robins produced and/or acted in such Ibsen plays as Hedda Gabler (1891, 1898), The Master Builder (1893), and Little Eyolf (1896). There are also business accounts and seating charts for the 1897 production of Echegaray's Mariana, which she directed. Some of these plays were produced by the New Century Theatre, which Robins, William Archer, and others formed. [See also Series Twelve: Printed Material for more on the New Century Theatre.]

In addition, there is material relating to the production of Votes for Women!, Robins's suffrage play, published in 1907. (Robins based her novel The Convert, also published in 1907, on Votes for Women!)

Subseries B is made up of typescripts and prompt copies of Ibsen and Echegaray plays. Most are annotated by Robins and some contain other annotations: the typescript for Mariana has added corrections by both Henry James and William Archer. There is also a prompt copy of Mrs. Humphry Ward's Eleanor, and a rare prompt copy of Henry James's play, The American, which Elizabeth Robins annotated.
