Size: 7 feet, 10 inches (includes 7 oversize boxes) Form: Theater programs, posters, proofs (galleys and page), magazines, newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, maps
Arranged in twelve subseries: Of special interest in this series are Elizabeth Robins's articles and stories, playbills documenting her performances, and broadsides and programs from her speaking engagements. Very few of the playbills are dated. Dates appear more frequently on the articles published in newspapers and periodicals. The printed material will be useful to those seeking documentary evidence of a wide range of Robins's activities and interests. Subseries A: Proofs of Elizabeth Robins's Literary Productions consists of annotated page proofs and galleys of many of Robins's works. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by title, so the box and folder list will serve as an index to the works. [See also Series Seven: Literary Productions.] Subseries B: Elizabeth Robins's Publications consists primarily of short stories and articles. There is also a copy of the autobiographical "Ibsen and the Actress" (1928). These publications are arranged alphabetically by title. Subseries C: Theatre includes playbills and announcements of performances, material on the New Century Theatre and publications, i.e. plays, reviews and articles. Theatrical posters have been moved to Map Drawer No. 2. Playbills and announcements of Elizabeth Robins's performances are arranged alphabetically by the name of the play. Included are tickets to Hedda Gabler and Little Eyolf. There are also playbills and announcements from other performances, many with annotations that show Elizabeth Robins attended them. They are arranged alphabetically by name of play, or by name of theater if no single play is prominently mentioned. Dates of the performances are indicated infrequently. The New Century Theatre folder contains an announcement describing the theater, a call for plays and donations, and playbills. The publications consist of published plays arranged alphabetically by title, and articles, including reviews of some of Elizabeth Robins's performances. Subseries D: Literary and Political Publications contains an assortment of publications and a collection of book jackets. The pamphlets and articles written by a variety of authors include reviews of some of Elizabeth Robins's publications. In addition, Robins gathered a collection of articles on race relations in America, including several brochures on the Tuskegee Institute. There are several issues of Votes for Women, the Women's Social and Political Union newspaper; Equal Rights, the National Woman's Party's paper; and a run of the Woman's Journal from 1909-1910. The book jacket collection includes four jackets from books by Elizabeth Robins: The Secret That Was Kept, Both Sides Of the Curtain, a mock-up for the cover of Theatre and Friendship and a cover illustration for The Mills of the Gods. A jacket for The Egypt's Gold by David Scott is included. Subseries E: Political, Cultural and Social Events consists of broadsides and programs from Elizabeth Robins's speaking engagements, calling cards, and additional programs and broadsides. The calling cards include cards from George R. Parks, David Scott, Saxton Robins, Florence Bell and Henrik Ibsen. Subseries F: Backsettown contains pamphlets and programs describing Robins's Sussex home after it was converted into a restplace for women. Some are illustrated with pictures of the grounds. Subseries G: Putnam Seminary includes descriptions of this boarding school attended by Elizabeth Robins and programs that list her among the performers. Subseries H: Alaska includes ten maps and three folders of publications (several from the U.S. Geological Survey) on Alaska. Subseries I: Pictures includes two of Elizabeth Robins. Subseries J: Maps consists of ten maps. Several are of neighborhoods in Covington, Kentucky. Series K: Newspaper Clippings is made up of four boxes of unsorted clippings.
