Washington Square Arch, 1980

Washington Square Arch, 1980

Washington Square Arch became the site of an art project in 1980. On May 4, Francis Hines wrapped the monument in 8,000 yards of polyester net. The cloth was secured with 3/8-inch cable and hand fabricated steel fixtures. The fabric sculpture remained in place through May 10 and served as the focal point of community efforts to restore Washington Square Park and the arch.
