Fencing practice on the roof of one of the University buildings, January 1929

Fencing became a varsity sport in 1923. Since then, NYU teams have achieved national prominence, and NYU fencers have represented the United States Olympic teams with regularity. From the late 1950s through the mid-1970s, NYU fencing teams were among the best in the nation. From 1957-1961, NYU fencers lost only one dual match. In an eight-year span, from 1966-1974, they lost only four matches, and from 1969-1972, Violet teams were undefeated.
