Early Lacrosse Team

Intercollegiate athletic competition was introduced at the Washington Square campus in the 1870s. The first NYU baseball team was formed in the early 1870s, and the team regularly challenged Rutgers, Yale, Columbia, and Manhattan College. Also in the 1870s, the University’s first football team, one of the first collegiate football teams in the United States, was formed. By 1907, the University had varsity teams in baseball, football, basketball, tennis, and track.
