In 1917, NYU student volunteers mobilize for France during WWI. Organized by the American Field Service, these volunteers would go on to drive ambulances on the front lines.

Enrollment declined when the United States entered the war and university officials responded by establishing units of the Student Army Training Corps; 1,613 students would eventually participate.
