University Janitor with Gong and Mallet

During the early 19th century, the University janitor used a gong and mallet to summon students to Chapel and to other events. Additionally, it was customary in the early years of the University for the janitor to lead the commencement procession in recognition of the important role he played in the University’s affairs.
