Chemistry Lab in the old University Building

By January 1854, Chancellor Ferris had developed a course in Practical Chemistry. This course later evolved into the School of Analytical and Practical Chemistry, first department within the University to award a Ph.D. degree on examination, rather than as an honorary degree.
