    John Schaefer is an economics and math major in the College of Arts and Sciences at New York University. He was a sophomore when he wrote this research paper for the lecture course "The Irish in America" taught by Dr. Marion R. Casey in Spring 2001. His original title was "Athletics and Identity: Redefining Americanism." The paper is published here by the Archives of Irish America with the permission of its author and with minimal editing by Dr. Casey.
