Librarians from the NYU Washington Square and Mount Sinai-NYU Medical Center (including NYU Downtown and the Hospital for Joint Diseases) have collaborated to provide this centralized site to assist nursing students, practicing nurses, nursing educators and administrators in meeting many of their online information needs. The genesis of the project was the Nursing Informatics Competency Project [http://library.med.nyu.edu/library/libinfo/classes/nursing.html], a tutorial designed to train practicing nurses in the ICU in obtaining information to support patient care. Based on the NYU Libraries Information Literacy Competencies, this expanded and more comprehensive site, from a beginner's guide to research through evidence-based nursing concepts, presents modules to facilitate locating, evaluating, and applying knowledge gained from searching the literature. As this site develops, a skills assessment tool will be available to guide nurses in meeting information literacy competencies. It will include tutorials and guides to searching both the biomedical and psychosocial databases as well as the web, with campus-specific as well as nationally accessible resources to support skill development.
