Searching the Web | web directories Directories are guides compiled by human indexers who assign subject headings to describe the contents of web sites. Searching a web directory is similar to browsing the table of contents of a book or the telephone yellow pages. One tries to decide how someone else might have classified information by browsing categories. Yahoo.com , like CINAHL, organizes information in hierarchical categories. It is possible to locate Web sites in Yahoo by browsing (or "drilling down" ) through the hierarchies. Links: In the example shown above, Yahoo
provides links to several sites devoted to Florence Nightingale, including
one with the full text document, "Florence Nightingale: Rural Hygiene,"
an essay written by Nightingale on the subject of hygiene. © NYU Libraries | Who We Are | Feedback Form | Ask
