hen we think of the Village, we often think of Bohemia and the eclectic characters that often typify the Greenwich Village artist. In fact, most early bohemians hardly resembled modern stereotypes. The lives of the artists and writers living in the village were often portrayed in the popular press and served as inspiration for many books on the subject of artists and urban lifestyles.
Included in this section are literary texts related to the history of the neighborhood, from entire texts, such as Washington Square, to selections from Cecil Dreeme and The Memoirs of Anna Lynch Botta, to articles from nineteenth century periodicals and student diaries.
