In 1895, discussions began regarding the replacement of the University Building with a more modern sturcture, one more capable of keeping pace with the increasing demands of a growing university.

Stanford White, principal of the Architectural firm McKim, Meade and White, had plans drawn up for a proposed interior renovation intended to save this prestigious building, one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture, from demolition.

Unfortunately, White's plans were not to be realized and in 1895, a new building; the Main building was erected in its place where it stands to this day at the northeast corner of Washington Square.
