OUR MISSION

The Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Services at New York University exists to create campus environments that are inclusive and supportive of student diversity in the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

The Office accomplishes its Mission by:

 

Support Services and Programs

Weekly discussion groups are offered for students interested in confidential, informal dialogue with other students. Call the office for a current listing of groups this semester.

Drop-In socials give students a chance to get acquainted with Office resources, browse our library, snack, relax, and connect with others in a welcoming environment.

The Safe Zone project identifies a growing network of students, faculty, and staff across the University who are willing and prepared to provide support and information to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students.

The Office publishes a newsletter that informs the campus community of events and issues of interest to the LGBT and ally population.

Any student can schedule an appointment or stop by during regular office hours to talk confidentially about anything from coming out to bias incidents to dating issues.

Resources

A lending library of books, magazines, articles, and videos available for research or personal interest is housed at the Office.

Office staff can provide referrals to sensitive and responsible health, counseling, legal, and social resources at the University and in the community.

The Academic/Career resource binder provides assistance in locating scholarship, internship, and job opportunities to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students.

A listing of courses with lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender content offered at NYU is published by the Office each semester.

The Office assists in publicizing non-discrimination policies and appropriate grievance procedures.

The Office addresses the needs for education, training, policies, and resources for students, faculty, and staff that are necessary to create inclusive and supportive campus envionments.

Advocacy

The Office works with campus and local resources to provide individual support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students targeted by acts of bias.

Office staff record and report incidents of bias against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students.

Office staff work with other University units to ensure fast, effective responses to acts of bias.

Education

Office staff coordinate a peer education program that trains student leaders to present on LGBT issues to classes, student programs, or student clubs.

The Office sponsors a variety of cultural, educational, and social programs to address the diverse needs and interests of the LGBT community.

The Office sponsors workshops and events during theme month celebrations and provides other campus-wide programming to increase campus understanding of LGBT issues.

Training and Consultation

Office staff offer leadership workshops exploring the challenges, rewards, roles, and skills of effective LGBT student leadership.

The Office extends active, ongoing support to student organizations.

Office staff provide LGBT issues training to campus peer education groups, resident assistants, and various staff units.

The Office assists other University offices and individuals in developing programs and services on LGBT issues.

The Office offers staff and faculty development sessions on various topics affecting the LGBT student population.
