Office of Legal Counsel

The Office of Legal Counsel serves as a strategic partner to its clients, providing advice, guidance and quality legal services to the University community in support of NYU's overarching goals and objectives. While the University as an institution is our client, our support and legal services are provided to the Board of Trustees, the President, the Provost, the Executive Vice President, vice provosts, vice presidents, deans and heads of academic units, administrative department heads, and other representatives and related interests of the University.

OLC's objective is to provide professional and reliable advice, guidance and support, including:

  • serving as a resource for informed decision-making and creative problem-solving to facilitate the University's pursuit of its mission of teaching, research, and service;
  • advising and supporting University personnel to ensure excellence in fulfilling NYU's legal, ethical and regulatory obligations - as individuals and as a University;
  • representing the University as legal counsel in judicial and governmental proceedings and advocating and defending its interests; and,
  • coordinating and facilitating the provision of effective, efficient, quality legal services for the University, through the Office and outside law firms.
