Architect's rendering of the Kimmel Center for University Life

New York University enters the 21st Century as one of the world's leading centers for teaching and research, attracting some of the brightest men and women from across the country and around the globe. Such an institution requires a place where its students, faculty, alumni, and friends can come together to build on the tremendous spirit that has enabled NYU to achieve so much. The Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life will be such a place.

The Kimmel Center, which is named in honor of its principal benefactors, Helen and Martin Kimmel, will provide a place for many of the events that comprise the University's rich and varied campus life: meetings and activities of the over 250 student clubs at NYU; lectures and conferences featuring national and international leaders; career information sessions and recruitment fairs; and events for alumni and parents. Several of the spaces where these and other activities will take place are available for naming.

For a gift of $10,000 or more, alumni, parents, and friends may name a meeting or seminar room, a lounge, an office, or a computer facility. For information, call (212) 998-6900 or e-mail kimmel.naming@nyu.edu.

Located within the Kimmel Center will be the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, which is named in recognition of a generous gift from the Skirball Foundation. With a 1,000-seat theatre, the Skirball Center will be the largest performing arts facility south of 42nd Street. Outfitted with state-of-the-art light, sound, and projection equipment, it will provide a professional level facility for concerts, film screenings, and theatrical productions showcasing the talents of NYU undergraduates and graduates. Naming opportunities within the Skirball Center range from individual theatre seats, each of which may be named for a gift of $1,000, to the theatre's spectacular lobby, which will open onto La Guardia Place and is available for naming in recognition of a gift of $250,000.

Designed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo Associates (the architect for the Holocaust Memorial/Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and scheduled for completion in Fall 2002, the Kimmel Center will be a signature 12-story structure centrally located on Washington Square South and La Guardia Place. The top two floors will be glass-enclosed, allowing for sweeping views of Washington Square and lower Manhattan.

The creation of this landmark facility marks a significant milestone in the life of the University, reflecting its excellence in academic and professional education and its prominent role as a hub for national and international events. At the same time, the Kimmel and Skirball Centers will usher in a new era at Washington Square. Outlined below are the various ways that you, your family, or your class can play a part in this historic undertaking.
