NYU offers videoconferencing services for faculty, staff, and administrators. Videoconferencing allows participants to conduct simultaneous audio and video communication between two or more locations anywhere in the world.
Videoconferencing Locations
ITS-managed videoconferencing facilities are available for use by all schools at multiple locations on campus. In addition, many departments and schools at Washington Square and at NYU's global sites offer their own videoconferencing services. Click here to see if your school or department offers videoconferencing.
ITS Videoconferencing System
ITS uses an h.264 compatible Polycom videoconferencing system. The system is situated in a traditional conference room and includes a camera, microphone, and large monitor. This system lends itself well to meetings and other sorts of administrative communication.

Connection Types: IP and ISDN
ITS' videoconferencing system supports both ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) and IP (Internet Protocol) connections; the most common and easiest connection type is IP. In most cases, ITS staff will contact the technical staff at the remote site to determine the best connection type to fit your needs. If, however, you receive a request from someone outside of NYU inviting you to participate in a videoconference, you should ask them which type of connection they would like to use, then specify that type on the ITS videoconferencing request form.
Other Video Communication Options
NYU offers two additional ways to visually connect with people around the world:
Satellite Downlinks
The Television Center (TVC) offers satellite video downlinking, which is geared more towards specific events that are being distributed via satellite as opposed to point-to-point communication. TVC staff can assist faculty with identifying relevant conferences and arranging for downlinking and viewing. To set up a satellite conference, contact the Television Center at 1-212-998-5163.
The TVC does not offer an uplink service, but they can assist you with making arrangements with a third-party service. In general, satellite-based two-way conferences are very expensive and require generous time to prepare.
- Internet2
Internet2 is an advanced academic network that provides fast Internet connections between 206 participating universities and is often used to broadcast live, collaborative performances. For more information about using Internet2, see the ITS Advanced Networking web page, or contact the NYU Digital Studio.
