Overview

In order to connect to NYURoam Wireless, you will need to do the following (described in more detail below and on the following pages):

1. Configure your Wireless Adapter

Since NYURoam is not available to the general public, your wireless adapter will need to be manually configured as instructed below.

2. Go to an NYURoam Wireless Access Location

You must be at a designated NYURoam Wireless access location to receive a signal from NYURoam. Click here for the complete list of locations.

3. Connect to NYURoam

Once you have completed the two steps above, you will be able to receive a signal from NYURoam.

4. Authenticate with your NYU NetID & Password

Once connected, you may need to authenticate with your NYU NetID and password to connect to NYURoam. However, Windows owners who use the new nyu wireless network (described below) will be automatically authenticated after the initial set-up is complete.

Configuration Instructions

Recommended Configuration

NEW: "nyu" Network for Common WiFi Adapters & Apple Airport >>
The new nyu wireless network provides one convenient method of access to the NYURoam network for all laptop computers that support WPA or WPA2 (described in more detail within the instructions), and offers a variety of enhancements, including better security, automatic sign-in for Windows users, and no need for a separate VPN client. ITS recommends that all community members with compatible computers use the nyu network.

Alternative Configurations

If you are unable to use the nyu network described above, select your computer's wireless adapter from the list below to access your configuration instructions:

  • Common WiFi Wireless Adapters >>
For those who are running Windows 2000 or XP on their laptop computer and using a wireless adapter from a company other than Cisco, such as Netgear, Linksys, Intel, Belkin, Realtek, Dell, etc. You will be configuring your adapter to connect to the access point NYU-ROAM3, with encryption disabled.
  • Apple Airport Wireless Adapter >>
For people with an Apple PowerBook or iBook computer running the Mac OS X 10.x operating system. You will be configuring your adapter to connect to the access point NYU-ROAM2. NOTE: As an option, you can also use the Cisco VPN Client with your Apple AirPort adapter.

A Note About NYU-ROAM1
Please note that NYU-ROAM1 is being phased out and will be unavailable by summer 2008. Users of NYU-ROAM1 are encouraged to migrate to the faster, more secure nyu network. Click for instructions on setting up your computer to use nyu. If you need help, please contact ITS Client Services at AskITS@nyu.edu or 8-3333.

Hand Held Devices/PDAs
You can connect to NYURoam with a handheld device via the nyupda SSID, provided the device meets system requirements. Configuration instructions are available for devices that meet the requirements. (Note that general information about using certain handheld devices at NYU is available at www.nyu.edu/its/pda/.)
