did you know?

  • Everyone who uses New York University phone service is subject to the fraud, abuse, and harassment provisions of State and Federal communications law as well as applicable University policies.

Basic Service

NYU’s Information Technology Services (ITS) provides telephone services to students housed in most NYU residence halls. Telephone service from another provider is not available in buildings served by the NYU telephone system.

Long Distance Services

Long distance service in residence halls served by the NYU telephone system is provided by PAETEC Communications CampusLink Services. PAETEC provides you with a CampusLink Account Number and Personal Billing Number (PBN) for billing long distance, international, and directory assistance calls. See the Long Distance section for details.

Voice Mail

NYU provides free voice mail upon request for each telephone number. Roommates share the voice mailbox associated with a shared telephone number. See the Voice Mail section for details.

Telephones & Jacks

Students are responsible for providing their own telephones. Any standard telephone is acceptable.

Connecting Your Telephone

  • Set your telephone's ringer to "On" and "Tone," not "Pulse."
  • Plug your telephone into the telephone jack. It is the top-most or left-most jack. The other jack is for your ResNet connection.

Your Telephone Number

Telephone numbers are assigned to an NYU residence hall bedroom, not to an individual. If you move, the telephone number remains in the room. Please be aware of this when distributing your telephone number.

• Include the area code when sharing your telephone number.

Five-Digit Extensions for Room-to-Room & On-Campus Dialing

The NYU extension is the last 5 digits of the telephone number. For example, to reach Coles Sports Center, dial 82020.

Directory Listings

It is NYU policy not to automatically list students in the NYU Directory. To appear in the Directory you must choose to be listed.

  • Go to the ITS Start Page at http://start.nyu.edu.
  • Log in with your NYU NetID and password, then select the Online Student Directory link.
  • NYU residence hall telephone numbers are not listed in directory assistance or in the Manhattan White Pages.

Call Waiting, 3-Way Calling, Caller ID, and Last Number Redial

Call Waiting

Call waiting enables you to answer another incoming call while you are on an existing call. If you do not answer the second call, it will go to voice mail (if voice mail is active).

When you hear the beep:

  • Press the switch hook or flash button once.
  • Wait for dial tone.
  • Dial * 8.
  • To toggle between these two calls, repeat the above steps.

3-Way Calling

3-way calling allows you to talk to two people at the same time.

To use 3-way calling:

  • Place your first call.
  • Press the switch hook or flash button.
  • Place your second call.
  • Press the switch hook or flash button.
  • Both calls are connected to you.

Caller ID Service

Caller ID service is activated on all telephone lines and will work as soon as the telephone is attached. You must supply your own caller ID device.

Last Number Redial

Last number redial enables you to easily redial the last internal or external call you made. This is helpful when you want to redial a line that was busy.

To redial the last number:

  • Lift the handset, listen for dial tone.
  • Dial * + 1.

Note: If the last number you dialed was a long distance call, you will need to re-enter your PBN after you hear three short beeps then the dial tone.
