- Dial "9+1," plus the area code and the seven-digit phone number for all other calls, both local and long distance.
- Include your area code when sharing your number with family, friends, colleagues, and business associates.
- You must dial "9" before placing 711 (TDD) or 411 (directory assistance) calls from on campus.
Placing Calls
The NYU telephone service enables you to place free calls from one campus telephone to another and to any local area number. Long distance and international calls are part of your PAETEC long distance service.
On-Campus: 5-Digit Dialing
- The NYU extension is the last 5 digits of the telephone number. For example, to reach Coles Sports Center, dial 82020.
Local Calls: Area codes 212, 917, 646, 718, and 347
- Dial 9 + 1 + area code + XXX-XXXX.
- In an emergency, dial 911 directly.
- Dial 9 + 711 to reach the New York Relay Service for TTY devices.
Long Distance Calls
Long distance calls require the use of your Personal Billing Number (PBN).
- Dial 9 + 1 + area code + XXX-XXXX.
- Listen for three quick beeps followed by dial tone.
- Enter your PBN.
International Calls
International calls require the use of your Personal Billing Number (PBN).
- Dial 9 + 011 + country code + city code + the number + #.
- Listen for three quick beeps followed by dial tone.
- Enter your PBN.
Toll Free Numbers
- Dial 9 + 1 + toll free area code + XXX-XXXX.
Directory Assistance Calls
Directory assistance calls require your Personal Billing Number (PBN).
For local directory assistance listings:
- Dial 9 + 411+ #.
- Listen for three quick beeps followed by dial tone.
- Enter your PBN.
For directory assistance listings in other area codes:
- Dial 9 + 1 + area code + 555-1212.
- Listen for three quick beeps followed by dial tone.
- Enter your PBN.
For toll free directory assistance listings:
- Dial 9 + 1 + 800 + 555-1212.
Policy on Charging Calls, Calling Cards, Credit Cards, Collect, and Third-Party Calls
Inbound collect and third-party calls cannot be accepted. You can place calls using your personal telephone company calling card or a prepaid calling card. Follow the instructions on the back of the calling card.
