Directory Assistance

Voice Activated NYU Directory

You can be directly connected by telephone to NYU faculty, staff, and administrators by calling NYU's main number at 1-212-998-1212. This service combines voice recognition, dial-by-name functionality, and other technologies to locate a listing requested by a caller, and then transfer the caller to the appropriate staff or faculty member's office number. (Please note that the VAD is still being fine-tuned, and may currently include some unusual pronunciations of names.)

To request a change to your Public Directory listing, please submit a request for help with your name and NYU NetID (found on your NYUCard) using the Ask ITS contact form at www.nyu.edu/its/askits/contactus.

NYU Public Directory

The NYU Public Directory is available at www.nyu.edu/search. Note: the print version of the NYU Directory is no longer available; please use the online version instead. To request a change to your Public Directory listing, please send an email to directory.request@nyu.edu.

Charging Calls

Calling Card, Credit Card, Collect, and Third Party Calls

Credit cards billable to NYU are not available. Inbound collect and third party calls will not be accepted. The telephone company cannot accept billing to any University extension. Calls to the 900 area code are not permitted. Calls to pseudo-800 numbers which attempt to bill back to the caller are prohibited. You may, however, place calls from University phones that will be billed to your personal telephone company calling card or to a number outside the University.

Sending a Facsimile (Fax)

Please follow the instructions below when sending a fax using a University telephone extension. Faxes are sent either by dialing using a telephone instrument connected to the fax machine or by using the built-in keypad on the fax machine itself. Consult your fax manual on sending a fax for instructions specific to your machine. If you have difficulty programming your fax machine, please contact ITS at 1-212-998-3333 and select option 2.

Fax numbers are included in the individual and departmental alphabetical listings of the NYU Directory.

When dialing from a separate telephone connected to the fax machine:
Use normal University dialing procedures as outlined here in the section titled Dialing Instructions.

When using the keypad on the fax machine, follow the instructions below.

Authorization Codes and Long Distance Calling

For further information, or if you are having problems with your authorization code, please call 1-212-998-3333 and select option 2.

United States and Canada

  • Dial 9 + 1 + area code + XXX-XXXX.
