The 8434D is a 34-button telephone with speakerphone, alphanumeric display, and two columns of buttons for Busy Lamps, Message Lamps or Autodial buttons.

Call Appearance &
Feature Buttons

There are 34 programmable extension (call) appearance and feature buttons in the center of the telephone. These buttons vary in how they are programmed depending upon the function of the person using the telephone. The features described below can also be accessed by using feature codes indicated in [brackets].

The dark purple italicized headers below indicate features that can be programmed by the ITS Communications & Computing Services Department.

Extension (Call) Appearances

These buttons are marked with the extension numbers (the last five digits of the telephone number) that are programmed onto the buttons. Principals typically have three appearances of their extension. Persons covering main department numbers and other people's phones may have appearances of their own extension, appearances of the department number, and cover lines for answering calls for other people.

Call Pickup

Allows you to answer calls placed to other extensions in your group or department without having those extensions on your phone.

To use:

  • Lift handset or activate the Speaker, then press the Call Pickup button [or dial #4].

Send Calls

When activated, all your calls go directly to your next point of coverage—either voice mail or a cover person. A single ring is heard when the feature is activated.

To activate:

  • Press the Send Calls button. (Green light will go on.) [Or lift handset and dial *3.]

To deactivate:

  • Press the Send Calls button. (Green light will go out.) [Or lift handset and dial #3.]

Last Number Redial

Redials the last telephone number you dialed.

To use:

  • Lift handset [or press Speaker].
  • Press the Last Number Dialed button [or dial *1].

Call Coverage

Calls to a person's extension can be programmed to progress to voice mail or to another phone or phones and then to voice mail. The norm is three rings before the call progresses. Two to six rings are possible. Please see the help page for instructions on how to place an order for (or change) this feature.

Cover Line

Used on the phones of those people who cover for the calls of others. This is a call appearance of an extension to which coverage calls (see above) will ring. Note: A cover line cannot be dialed directly. Calls reach the cover line either through call coverage or when someone has pressed the zero option in voice mail (opting to speak with someone).

Call Forwarding

Allows you to have your calls ring at another NYU extension instead of your own.

To activate:

  • Lift handset or activate Speaker, dial *2.
  • Enter the NYU extension to which you wish to forward your calls. (You will hear a three beep confirmation tone.)

To deactivate:

  • Lift handset or activate Speaker. Press the call appearance button of the forwarded line. Dial #2. (You will hear a three beep confirmation tone.)

Transfer to Voice Mail

If you have answered a call for a coworker through call pickup or call coverage, you can transfer the caller to the coworker's voice mail without calling the coworker's number.

To use:

  • Press Transfer.
  • Dial *4.
  • When voice mail greeting begins, press Transfer.

Fixed Feature Buttons

These are the nine buttons on the lower left of the phone. They are described below.

Volume

Use the Volume toggle button to raise and lower the ring volume, the loudness of the speakerphone, or the loudness of the volume heard through your handset.

  • Press the left side of the Volume button to lower the volume, and the right side to raise it.

Shift or Ring

[Some 8434Ds do not have a Shift button.]
The Shift button is used to reset the Speaker and the Ring Pattern (see Speaker and Selecting a Ring Pattern). The Ring button is used to select the ring pattern.

Transfer

To send a call to another NYU extension:

  • Press Transfer. (This places the caller on hold.)
  • Dial the extension to which the call is to be transferred. (When the party answers, announce the call.)
  • Press Transfer again and hang up. (If the party does not wish to accept the call, press the call appearance button where the green light is flashing.)

Test

To test the lights and the display on your telephone:

  • Press and hold down the Test button. (The green Test light goes on. The button lights will go on in four separate groups, and the display fills in all segments.)
  • To end the test, release the Test button.

Conference-Six Party

The conference feature allows you to connect up to six parties, including yourself.

To initiate a conference call:

  • Get first party on the line.
  • Press Conf button. (First party is on hold).
  • Dial the number of the new party, wait for an answer and announce the conference.
  • Press Conf button again. All parties are connected.
  • Repeat previous three steps for each additional conference connection.

To conference a caller you have on hold with a party you are speaking with on another call appearance:

  • Press Conf button.
  • Press the call appearance button of call on hold (first call).
  • Press Conf again. All parties are connected.

Mute

Use in conjunction with the speaker.

  • Press Mute to prevent the distant party from hearing you. (Red light goes on.)
  • Press Mute again to resume talking to party. (Red light goes out.)

Drop

To drop the last party added to a conference call or to get a new dial tone if you have misdialed.

To use:

  • Press Drop.

Speaker

To place or answer a call without lifting the handset:

  • Press Speaker.
  • Place or answer a call, or access a feature.
  • Adjust speaker volume, if necessary, using the Volume button.

Resetting the Speaker

To adjust the Speaker to the surrounding room acoustics:

  • If your phone has a Shift button: While on-hook, press Shift and then press Speaker. (You will hear a series of tones.)
  • If your phone does not have Shift button: If the light next to the Speaker button is flashing, simply press the Speaker button.

Hold

Used to place a call on hold.

To answer a new call while active on a call:

  • Press Hold. (Initial call is on hold; green lamp will flash.)
  • Press the call appearance button of the incoming call.

To return to the call on hold:

  • Press the call appearance button of the call on hold (where the green lamp is flashing).

Selecting a Ring Pattern

There are eight different ring patterns. A particular ring pattern can help you distinguish your phone's ring from others around you. The ring pattern can be set by using the Shift or the Ring button; your telephone will have one or the other.

To use:

If your phone has a Shift button:

  • Press Shift.
  • Press Hold to hear the present pattern. (Continue pressing the Hold button until the desired ring pattern is heard.)
  • Press Shift again to store the selected ring pattern.

If your phone has a Ring button:

  • Press Ring until the desired ring pattern is heard.

 

Message Lamp

The message waiting lamp, which is above the 3 key on the touch tone keypad, will light when you have new messages in your voice mailbox.

System Feature Codes

  • Last Number Dial: *1
  • Call Forwarding: Activate *2, Deactivate #2
  • Send Calls: Activate *3, Deactivate #3
  • Transfer to Voice Mail: *4 (only possible if call is being transferred from a call pickup, cover line, or bridged appearance of that voice mailbox extension)
  • Call Pickup: #4

Display Buttons

  • Menu—to access features programmed into the soft key buttons (arrow items) at the top of the 8434D.
  • Next—to scroll to the next set of display features programmed on your phone.
  • Prev—to scroll to the previous set of features.
  • Exit—to exit the soft key menu and return the telephone set to normal operation.

Display Features

  • Date/Time—displays Day, Date and Time.
  • Timer—to see the elapsed time of a call.
  • Inspect—to see the display-related information for a call on hold or an incoming call while you are on another call.

Additional Features

The following features can be programmed onto the two right-hand columns of the telephone:

Busy Lamps

Busy Lamps allow cover persons to monitor when the party whose extension is listed on the Busy Lamp is on the phone (green lamp is lit). It can also be used to place or transfer calls to the extension listed.

To use a Busy Lamp to place a call:

  • Lift handset and press the Busy Lamp OR simply press the Busy Lamp button—your speaker will be activated and the person's phone will ring.

To use the Busy Lamp to transfer a call:

  • Press Transfer. (This puts the caller on hold.)
  • Press the Busy Lamp. (When the party answers, announce the call.)
  • Press Transfer again and hang up. (If the party does not wish to accept the call, press the call appearance where the green light is flashing.)

Message Lamp

Indicates to the cover person that there is a new voice mail messages for the listed extension.

Autodial Buttons

Twenty-three of the 24 buttons can be used for speed dialing; the 24th is used for the Program button.

To program an Autodial (AD) button:

  • Lift handset or activate Speaker.
  • Press the Program button.
  • Press the AD button you wish to program.
  • Using the touch tone key pad, dial the number you wish to store there. (E.g., an extension number or 9 + 1 + area code and 7-digit number.)
  • Press the AD button you are programming again.

To use an Autodial button:

  • Lift handset, press AD button OR simply press the AD button (the speaker will automatically be activated).
