- Streaming Media Services is an joint project with ITS and the Libraries.
Training & Resources
If you plan to incorporate audio or video clips into your lesson plan, either in class or for assignments, you may want to consider streaming them. A streamed media clip is delivered progressively to your computer while it is being watched or listened to, rather than requiring you to download a complete file before you view or listen to it. Streamed audio and video can be added to your Blackboard course site or other website and accessed through a web browser.
The Digital Studio offers training and resources to NYU faculty for creating streamed media. Digital Studio assistants can show you how to take video and/or audio from a cassette tape, CD, VHS tape, video camera (VHS or digital), DVD, or any other media source and convert it to a compressed digital format (e.g., MP3, QuickTime, Real, Windows Media). Compressing the audio or video makes the files smaller for easy distribution to your students. ITS' streaming media server currently only supports RealVideo and Audio formats.
For more information about the Digital Studio or to request an appointment, please visit the Digital Studio website.
Request an Account
To apply for a streaming account, print and fill out a Request for Individual Computer Account form (click to download).
Please return the completed form to the ITS Accounts and Access Management Office at 10 Astor Place, 4th floor, or fax it to (212) 995-4929.
NOTE: Indicate on the form in "Section 3. - Other" that you are interested in a Real streaming account.
Playback
Audio streamed from the NYU streaming server can be played back by any desktop MP3 player.
Video streamed from the NYU streaming server will need to be played with RealPlayer. To download a free copy, go to www.real.com and select the "Get RealPlayer - Free" button.
