Keep Your Password Fresh!
As part of our ongoing effort to improve computer security at NYU, Information Technology Services requires everyone to change the password used with their New York University NetID on an annual basis. We are initiating this practice to better protect University data, your personal information, and the range of services available over the NYU network.
This improvement will affect access to many services, notably including NYUHome, central email service, wireless and proxy access, and other restricted-access web pages and applications such as Oracle Workflow that require central NYU NetID authentication. This will also affect you if you are using an email client like Eudora or Outlook to check your mail. You must change your password for continued access to these services.
You will be notified when your password is due to expire. You will receive three emails: first, three weeks before your password will be expired, then one week before, and finally one day before it is set to expire. Coordinated with these email messages, you will also see splash screen messages when you log into NYUHome notifying you that you need to change your password.
If you change your password before the expiration date, you will not receive any further reminders. If you change your password more frequently than the yearly interval, you can avoid these notices all together.
If you do not change your password prior to the expiration date, you will no longer be able to use your NetID and password to log into NYUHome or to get your NYUHome email through a client like Eudora or Outlook. You will also not be able to access the other valued services mentioned earlier, until you go to the Start Page and reset your password.
How to Change Your Password
- Go to http://start.nyu.edu. (You can also click on the CHANGE link next to your password in your NYUHome Preferences, the link for which appears at top right of screen, to go directly to the password change screen.)
- Log in with your NetID and current password.
- Click the "Change your password" link.
- Follow the instructions on that page to change your password.
- When creating your new password, remember the following password requirements:
- passwords must be 8 or more characters in length
- must consist of letters (a-z and/or A-Z) AND at least one number (0-9) AND at least one special character: !@#$%^&*()_-+=[]|\;"~',<>./?
- the alphabetic portion of a password, taken as a whole, may not be a dictionary word proper name, or person's initials
- you may not reuse a password that you've previously used
Your new password will be valid almost immediately. If you test your account and this does not seem to be the case, you should repeat the process of changing your password. If your new password still doesn't work, you should call the ITS Client Services Center at 1-212-998-3333.
Please send questions or feedback to its.clientservices@nyu.edu or call ITS Client Services at 1-212-998-3333.
