New PowerPoint Virus

07/28/06

There is a new virus which takes advantage of vulnerabilities in Microsoft's popular PowerPoint software to install a keystroke logger, and a backdoor which gives the hacker ongoing access to the computer. In order for a machine to be infected, you must open an email attachment containing the corrupted PowerPoint file, or visit a website and download and open the file. There is no current fix for this vulnerability, so you should be particularly careful in opening unexpected attachments, even if they appear to come from people you know. There are virus signatures, so make sure your AV software is up to date.

Microsoft is developing a patch for the vulnerability, but it will probably not be released until the next scheduled Patch Tuesday, August 8. More information on the vulnerability can be found at Microsoft's site.
