Mathematica

License Requirements & Costs

Mathematica logo

www.wolfram.com
Mathematica is a general computing environment with organizing algorithmic, visualization, and user interface capabilities. The many mathematical algorithms included in Mathematica make computation easy and fast.

NYU has a campus-wide, "unlimited" site license for Mathematica software that is managed by ITS. The site license is available for use by any "affiliated individual" on "eligible computers" (computers owned or leased by NYU and primarily used for teaching and academic research). Faculty and staff who join the site license are also entitled to receive an additional Mathematica license for personally-owned machines. The upgrades for home use are free for NYU faculty and staff, as are updates throughout the year.

The annual fee for single users is $165 for the software and $15 for the CD containing the software. Departmental licenses cost approximately $2,000, depending on the number of seats included in the network license. Mathematica training courses are available at a 30% discount for site license participants.

Instructions

  • Faculty, staff, administrators, or departments who wish to join the site license should send email to hpc@nyu.edu.
  • Students who wish to use Mathematica should check to see whether their department has joined the site license, which enables student access. If not, the Physics Department, Courant Institute, Center for Neural Sciences, Politics, ITS, and the ITS Fourth Street Academic Technology Center have copies of the software installed on their computers for student use.

Version and Operating System Information

EndNote

End Note logo

www.endnote.com
EndNote allows you to search, retrieve, and store citations from bibliographic databases such as ABI Inform, the Web of Science, Anthropological Literature, the MLA bibliography, or the catalogs of individual libraries. It can generate bibliographies, reading lists, and footnotes in a wide variety of styles, and because it links directly to word-processing programs such as Microsoft Word and Wordperfect, you are able to add and format citations to papers as you write.

EndNote is supported by NYU Libraries.

For additional information about using EndNote, see the NYU Libraries EndNote support page or attend a free Library Class.

Site License Requirements & Costs

  • NYU-licensed copies of EndNote software are available free to NYU faculty, administrators, staff, and students.
  • Software may be retained after leaving NYU.

Download and Installation

  1. Download the installer (NYU NetID/Password may be required.)
Note: The Mac installers come with a manual. There is no EndNote for Unix.

If you are updating from a previous version of EndNote, EndNote recommends that you uninstall any previous to avoid confusion later.

    • First back up any existing EndNote library files and any customized content files (e.g. styles, connection files, and filters).
    • Close all open programs, and then uninstall any older versions by selecting "Add/Remove Programs" from the Windows Control Panel (or trash the old folders on a Mac).
    • Once any older versions have been uninstalled, run the EndNote installer. This will create a new EndNote program folder, and you can then move any backed up library or content files into this new folder.
  2. Save the installer to your hard drive, and make a note of the folder that you saved it in.

  3. Install the software.
    • Windows:
      1. Run the installer.
      2. Accept all default settings and, if prompted, agree to the terms of the license.

    • Macintosh:
      1. If it does not open automatically, double click on the downloaded EndNote_X.dmg file.
      2. An installer will appear on your desktop.
      3. Drag the EndNote folder to your Applications folder in your hard drive. It may take a couple of minutes for the files to copy completely.
      4. The first time you click on the EndNote icon in its folder in Applications, you will be walked through a setup process. Accept the default settings and agree to the terms of license.
