As a member of the New York University community, your use of the University's computing and networking resources, and of the privileges that they extend, is governed by some simple conditions.
What is NYUHome?
NYUHome is a portal—a door to many online services and tools. You can access your email, Albert account, web forums, classes, research tools and more, all in one web page. Your NYUHome page is customizable, and can be adapted by you to fit your needs and interests. Different services and information, such as reference searches or a schedule of campus events, are provided through customizable channels.
Who is it for?
Your NYUHome account is for your private use. Many of your electronic interactions with the University include important functions such as registration and financial recordkeeping. Thus, the system must be sure it is communicating with you and not someone posing as you. To identify you and ensure that only you have access to the account:
- You are assigned a unique login ID—your NetID, which appears in the lower left corner of your NYU ID card.
- You cannot share your account with anyone. This includes, but is not limited to, sharing your password, allowing others to access your account, or creating accounts that allow others to access NYU-NET and NYU resources.
- You are required to create and regularly change a private password used to authenticate you to network services.
- Information Technology Services (ITS) will remind you with a system message or electronic mail of the need to change your password. It is your responsibility, however, to change your password on a regular basis and not to reveal it to other individuals.
- Your NetID and its corresponding password are sufficient to prove your identity. They allow you to perform many functions, including making permanent changes in your university records. Therefore, it is vital that you protect this information and not share it with any other person, intentionally or accidentally. You should not save your password on a shared computer. Log out promptly and completely from public terminals, since other people using those computers may be able to pose as you with that stored information.
Please refer to the NYUHome documentation and internal Help for additional measures that you can take to keep your account and password secure.
What is it used for?
You are given an NYUHome account for the purpose of facilitating your work as a University student, staff member or faculty member. To provide the best possible service to the NYU community, there are some constraints on what you can do with your account.
- You may not use your account for any commercial purpose.
- Use of your account is governed by university policies on conduct, as well as federal, state, and city laws, including copyright laws.
- You may not use your account in a manner which interferes with any other individual or network service, and should not use more than your allocated share of network and computing resources.
- Specific policies governing the creation and maintenance of official NYU web pages, as well as a number of useful hints and references, are available at www.nyu.edu/webguide/.
NYUHome has many powerful features, but it is a shared resource. Managing those resources fairly means that some functions are not available through your Home account.
- The system is not configured to support general-purpose computing and communications; thus, many popular software packages (such as Mathematica, compilers, etc.) are not available through these accounts.
- You may not install executable (or interpretable) code in your NYUHome account space, whether for your own or others' use.
- You are allotted a standard quota of system disk space, to hold your account configuration information, electronic mail, and web pages and files.
- NYU computer systems and NYU-NET are routinely monitored by authorized university staff members in order to safeguard the security and smooth operation of these resources. By using the system, you agree to this monitoring.
- Accounts will be deactivated and removed if an account holder's affiliation with New York University ends.
- If you need resources or tools not supported in this environment, please apply on the ITS Accounts website.
Network Usage Agreement
By activating or using an NYUHome account or service, you have agreed to these conditions in addition to those outlined in Responsibilities of all New York University Computer and Network Users.Thank you for your cooperation, and Welcome Home!
