  • It is not appropriate for NYU to provide Internet access to non-profit organizations unless there is a strong collaborative and programmatic affiliation between them and the University.

[The following policy statement was adopted by the New York University Data Communications Task Force at its September 1993 meeting. It is intended to provide guidelines for NYU departments and schools which receive requests from outside organizations requesting computer accounts which thereby provide Internet access. The general policy is that outside groups, including non-profit ones, need to obtain Internet access through a commercial service provider—and that it is no longer appropriate for the university to provide this access unless there is a strong collaborative and programmatic affiliation between the requesting (non-profit) organization and the university.]

Policy Statement

In the past, computing organizations at New York University have provided accounts on our machines to specific not-for-profit institutions having a programmatic affiliation with the University that depends upon access to NYU computing and network services. We will continue to consider such requests and evaluate them on their merits.

Under the terms of our agreement with CREN, such organizations may have access to Bitnet only if they become affiliate members of CREN. There is a yearly charge for such affiliation.

Historically, universities have often offered the only convenient way to obtain Bitnet and Internet connectivity. There are now an increasing number of commercial IP service providers offering a variety of connectivity and service options. Performance Systems International and Advanced Networks and Services are examples of firms operating in this new industry. We recommend that not-for-profit institutions having no programmatic affiliation with NYU contact these IP service providers to obtain the connectivity that they require.
