did you know?
- To comply with NYU's security policy, you are required to change your NYU NetID password at least once every year. Because this affects the password you use to check your NYU email, you must remember to change the password setting in your Treo web client if you want to continue using it to check your NYU email.
- Only NYU-issued PDAs and handheld devices are eligible to sync with Meeting Maker.
This guide will help you set up your Treo for use with a variety of NYU services. It begins with an introductory look at your Treo, then leads you through initial out-of-the-box setup. It also shows you how to configure your Treo to check and send NYU email, synchronize your Treo with your desktop address book, browse the Web, and use Meetingmaker™. Finally, it provides basic security and troubleshooting information.
Because instructions can vary from device to device and among wireless carriers (Cingular, Nextel, Verizon, etc.), it's important that you rely on the product- and network-specific instructions that come with your device and are given to you by the carrier you chose.

Out of the Box: Preparing Your Treo for Use
Before you can use your Treo to check email, send/receive calls, etc., there are several steps you must complete to set up the device. This section will:
- familiarize you with the essential controls;
- help you complete the necessary "pre-use" setup;
- guide you through installing and charging the battery; and
- guide you through installing the SIM chip.
Step One: Acquaint Yourself with the Controls
The manufacturer's guide included with the Treo (available as PDFs for your specific model at http://www.palm.com/us/support/) provides the most comprehensive overview of the controls. The essential and most frequently used features are shown below (items in italics are described later in these instructions).

Step Two: Install and Charge the Battery
- Press the battery door release button (Fig. 2, C) and slide open the battery door.
- Insert the battery at a 45-degree angle, then snap the battery into place and close the battery door.
After initial installation, you should charge it for four hours to assure a full battery. To do so:
- Plug the AC charger into a wall outlet, then connect the charger cable to the bottom of the Treo (Fig. 1, G). The arrow on the connector should face upward.
- Once this is done, you should see an indicator light (Fig. 1, A). Solid red means the Treo is charging. When the light turns solid green, your Treo is fully charged.
- When you turn the Treo on, you will see an onscreen battery status icon. A full battery icon means the Treo is fully charged; a partial battery icon means the Treo has some power and is not charging; an empty battery icon means the Treo has no power and needs to be recharged; a lightning bolt icon means the Treo is charging.
Step Three: Install the SIM Chip
Your Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) chip contains your account information. To use the phone, email, or web features of your Treo, you need to insert the SIM chip. Please note that the SIM chip may already be installed.
- Slide the SIM tray (Fig. 3, D) out of the Treo.
- Insert the SIM chip into the tray by aligning the notches until you feel it lock into place.
- Slide the SIM tray back into the phone.
- If your SIM chip is not already activated, follow the activation steps provided by your wireless carrier.
Activation: Powering Up and Setting Up
Now that the battery is charged and the SIM chip is in place, you can continue the setup process. This involves following a few easy steps to:
- turn the device on and activate your account;
- acquaint yourself with the screen display; and
- install the Palm Desktop Utility on your computer.
Step One: Treo Power and Account Activation
The Treo phone/network connection and Palm OS™ functions of the Treo can work independently of one another.
Turn the phone on and connect to the network:
Please note that the first time you turn the Treo phone on, you may be asked to complete an onscreen account activation as detailed below.
- Press and hold Power/End (Fig. 1, E). If sound mode is on, you will hear a series of ascending tones.
- Treo will search for and connect to its wireless network. The network connection icon on the top right alerts you to the status of the connection (see icon descriptions in "Acquaint Yourself with the Screen Display").
- If you are asked to complete account activation, use the stylus and follow the onscreen instructions.
- After activation is complete, you should make a call to assure the Treo is properly connecting to the network (see "Make a Call" under Use and Applications).
- To turn the phone off, press and hold Power/End again. If sound mode is on, you'll hear a series of descending tones.
Turn the Palm OS functions on or off:
Palm OS applications that do not require a network connection can be used without connecting to your wireless carrier.
- Briefly press Power/End (Fig. 1, E) to wake up the screen. You do not have to press and hold as you do to turn on the phone.
- Briefly press Power/End to turn off the screen.
Step Two: Acquaint Yourself with the Screen Display
You can monitor the status of several functions using the icons at the top of the screen. For a complete list of icons, please consult the manufacturer's guide included with your device.
For our purposes here, the most important top-screen icons are:
| Network Name | Displays your carrier's name when your phone is on and in a coverage area. Outside a coverage area, No service or SOS Only appears. When you turn off your phone, Phone Off appears. |
| Appears when you have voice mail. Some networks use a full-screen alert instead. Consult your wireless carrier for specific information. | |
| Network Connection Icon. Appears when your phone is on. The bars display the signal strength. | |
| The triangle appears when your phone is on and a GPRS or EDGE network is within range. (GPRS and EDGE are the radio transmission networks Treo uses to send and receive Internet data.) Some service providers do not show the triangle. Consult your wireless carrier for specific information. | |
| Appears when you are connected to a GPRS or EDGE network. | |
| Displays the battery charge status. | |
| Indicates that you have one or more unread email messages. |
Step Three: Install the Palm Desktop on Your Computer
The Palm Desktop Utility is the software program that allows you to sync your Treo with information on your computer.
- Plug the USB sync cable into an available USB port on your computer, or a USB hub connected to your computer.
- Connect the sync cable to the Multi-connector on the bottom of your Treo (Fig. 1, G).
- Insert the Software Installation CD that came with your Treo into the CD drive on your computer. If you are installing on a Mac, double-click the CD icon on the desktop, and then double-click the palmOneSoftware.pkg icon.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. During the installation process, you will be prompted to synchronize for the first time. To synchronize, press the HotSync button on the Multi-connector.
Use and Applications: Performing Tasks & Configuring Software
With your account set up and the Palm Desktop Utility installed, you can now make phone calls, send and receive email, browse the Web, and use calendaring software like Meetingmaker.
Make a Call
- Press and hold Power/End.
- Allow the Treo to complete a network search. When it is complete, the Network Status icon appears in the upper-right.

Meetingmaker and Treo
If Meetingmaker is already installed on your computer, you must uninstall it and run its installer again after installing the Palm Desktop software. The Treo conduits are installed when Meetingmaker detects the Palm Desktop and you check the option box telling it to do so. Any time you install a Palm desktop update, the Meetingmaker client must be re-installed as well. Because Meetingmaker information is stored on a remote server, you will not lose any information during re-installation.
Configuring the conduits (Windows):
- Open the HotSync manager.
- Select Custom from the menu.
- Select the Meetingmaker conduit to configure and click Change.
- Fill in the username and password with your Meetingmaker username (same as your NetID) and password.
- Fill in the server name with: meetings.
- Leave all other fields at their default settings until after the initial successful HotSync.
Configuring the conduits (Mac):
- Double click HotSync in the Palm directory.
- Select Configure from the HotSync menu. The Conduit Settings dialog box will be displayed.
- Double click the Meetingmaker conduit you wish to change or configure.
- Fill in the username and password with your Meetingmaker username (same as your NetID) and password.
- Fill in the server name with: meetings.
- Leave all other fields at their default settings until after the initial successful HotSync.
For more information on using Meetingmaker with Palm devices, see http://www.nyu.edu/its/software/mm/mmpalm.pdf.

Troubleshooting & Resources
Official Treo Support from PalmOne: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/
Soft Reset
If your Treo freezes at any point, the majority of problems can be fixed simply by using the Reset button (Fig. 2, E). Using your stylus, press the button and wait for the Treo to power on again.
Hard Reset
A hard reset will erase everything on your Treo. All your data will be removed and all settings restored to the default.
- Hold down the Treo power button.
- While holding down the power button, turn over your device and use the stylus to press the Reset button (Fig. 2, E).
- When the Palm Computing Platform or Palm Powered logo is displayed, release the power button.
- A message will appear warning that you are about to erase all the data. In response, do one of the following:
- Press the UP button to complete the hard reset.
- Press DOWN, LEFT, or RIGHT to begin a soft reset.
- Your Treo will take you through a series of calibration screens to complete the reset.
PUK Lock
If you receive a message telling you that your phone is in PUK LOCK, it is because an incorrect PIN has been entered more than three times in a row (see "Enable and Disable Phone Lock"). To remove this, you must call your wireless carrier and request a PUK (PIN Unlock Key). NYU cannot provide this for you.
Changing Your NYU NetID Password
To comply with NYU's security policy, you are required to change your NYU NetID password at least once every year. Because this affects the password you use to check your NYU email, you must remember to change the password setting in your Treo's email client if you want to continue using it to check your NYU email. Changing your NetID password does not affect the password for your carrier-specific email address or your SMTP server settings. It also does not affect your Treo system password if you have set one. To change your password:
In VersaMail:
- On your Treo, open VersaMail.
- Press the Menus button on your Treo keypad.
- Tap the Accounts menu, then select Account Setup.
- Select your NYU email account from the list, then tap Edit.
- The Account Setup wizard will open. Tap the Next button to get the Username and Password screen.
- Tap the Password field designated with -Assigned-.
- A window will open to allow you to enter your new NYU NetID password. Do so.
- Tap OK.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Done to close the wizard.
- Tap OK to accept your changes and return to the VersaMail main window.
In SnapperMail:
- On your Treo, open SnapperMail.
- Press the Menus button on your Treo keypad.
- Tap the Accounts (or Option in older versions) menu and select Edit Accounts.
- Select your NYU email account and tap Edit.
- Tap the Server tab.
- Tap the Password -Assigned- field under Incoming Mail.
- A window will open to allow you to enter your new NetID password. Do so.
- Tap OK to accept your password.
- Tap OK.
- Tap Done to return to the main SnapperMail window.
If you use a Treo email client besides VersaMail or SnapperMail, please refer to the software's documentation for instructions on updating your account configuration.
Forgotten Passwords
If you forget your System Password, neither NYU nor your carrier can retrieve it for you. You must perform a hard reset (see above), which will result in the loss of all entries stored on your Treo. You can restore them the next time you sync with your computer.
