did you know?

  • NYU residence hall residents should use ResNet to connect to NYU-NET and the Internet instead of DIAL.
  • If your DIAL connection is idle for 15 minutes, the service will automatically disconnect. This situation sometimes arises when people are typing a long email message. Open a web browser window and refresh it occasionally to avoid this situation.
  • As of 2004, NYU alumni no longer have access to the NYU DIAL service. See the ITS Accounts site for more information for alumni.

The Direct Internet Access Link "DIAL" service that comes with your NYUHome account lets you link your computer to NYU-NET by using a telephone line and a modem. With this link established, you can use a web browser, such as the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox, to access NYUHome, get your email, and browse the Web.

These are instructions for configuring your computer for DIAL service and connecting to NYU-NET. We recommend that you print this document now, so that you will have these instructions handy as you proceed through the setup process.

To complete these instructions, you will need:

  • A computer running Windows 2000 with Dial Up Networking installed.
  • A modem, 28.8 Kbps or faster, with its drivers installed.
  • An activated NetID and password.
(If you have not activated your NetID and set your password, you must do so from an Internet-connected computer before using your DIAL connection.)

Please Note:

  • Whenever you install software, including now, please take a moment to consider whether your computer has recently been backed up. If not, we recommend that you make another copy of all of your important files before you install new software.

  • If your computer doesn't already have the latest version of a web browser installed, you can install Internet Explorer or Firefox using the "Select & Install a Browser" section of this CD or the Software channel within the Files tab of NYUHome: http://home.nyu.edu. Be sure to update the browser with the latest patches as soon as you can connect to the Internet (see next item).

  • It is an important security practice to use an up-to-date browser, install all the latest browser patches, and keep your Windows system patched and up-to-date:
    • Once you have configured your computer for DIAL and can connect to the Internet, be sure to apply the latest browser patches by downloading and installing them from the Microsoft website (for Internet Explorer) or the Mozilla website (for Firefox).
    • Check for browser patches regularly, and run Windows Update at least several times a week. See Computer & Network Security site for details.
