  • NYU residence hall residents may use ResNet to connect to NYU-NET and the Internet.

Due to the widespread availability of residential broadband data services (e.g., cable and DSL), the use of NYU’s DIAL modem service has decreased sharply over the past several years. Maintaining DIAL service is costly, particularly as its usage declines and the underlying technology ages. As a result, DIAL service was retired on Tuesday, January 20, 2009.

As a replacement for NYU DIAL, ITS is recommending one of the services below. If you need help determining which service is best suited for your needs, please feel free to email AskITS@nyu.edu or call the ITS Client Services Center at 1-212-998-3333.

Cable and DSL Connections

Broadband access to the Internet, whether via DSL (digital subscriber line) or cable modem service, provides high speed access to a wide range of Internet resources, including University academic services. For broadband access via a cable modem, please contact your local cable service provider (e.g., Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Optimum Online); also, for DSL access, please contact your local telephone company (e.g., Verizon) or other DSL service provider.

Commercial Dial-Up Service

Commercial dial-up Internet service, the most basic means of Internet access available, is the most similar to NYU DIAL service, and is generally a less expensive option than broadband access. Earthlink, for example, offers dial-up service at modest rates (http://www.earthlink.net/access/dialup.faces).

Please note that, like NYU DIAL, commercial dial-up access is, in general, slower than broadband DSL and cable modem access, and will tie up a phone line while you are online.
