How do I upload and download files in my NYUHome account or to my NYUHome web page?
There is a File Manager built into NYUHome. You have a 50MB file quota.
To upload files to your account:
- From your NYUHome screen, go to the Files channel.
- Click Manage your files.
- When you enter the NYUHome File Manager, you are placed in your home directory; the current working directory.
If you want to upload the files to a directory other than your home directory, select another directory from the list, then click the
Open/Get button to switch into it. For example, if you want to upload a file to your web page, select the /public_html directory.
- Click the Upload button. You will be prompted to name the file you want to upload, or you can click on the Browse button to find the file on your local machine.
- Click the Upload button to transfer the file to your NYUHome file space.
To download files from your account to your home machine:
- From your NYUHome screen, go to the Files channel.
- Click Manage your files.
- When you enter the NYUHome File Manager, you are placed in your home directory; the current working directory.
- If the file is not in your home directory, select another directory from the list, then click the Open/Get button to switch into the different directory.
Click on the file you wish to transfer to your home machine.
- The Get as BIN button allows for the transfer of a binary file (such as .gif, .jpeg or Microsoft Word or Excel files) from the NYUHome space onto your local machine. Depending on how your browser is configured, you will be asked where you wish to save the file. If you encounter an error when transferring the file, make sure your browser preferences are configured to interpret binary file transfers.
- The Get as TEXT button lets you transfer a text file (such as .html or .txt files) from the NYUHome space onto your local machine. The text will open up in your browser window. From your browser's File menu, select Save As, and choose where you wish to save the file.
You can also use a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) client to connect to NYUHome.
NOTE: Dreamweaver users will have issues with their built-in file upload utility. Adobe is in the process of re-engineering their Dreamweaver product which they acquired from Macromedia. ITS is working with them to make their Dreamweaver SFTP add-on more compliant with standards.
Therefore, we recommend, instead of using any built-in file transfer utilities within your desktop publishing program, that you download and use a stand-alone Secure File Transfer Program (SFTP) to upload your files to your web space.
ITS provides free SFTP programs (Fugu and Fetch for Macintosh, WinSCP for Windows) and other software at http://software.nyu.edu, also accessible via the Software channel in the new "Ask ITS" area of NYUHome. (Please note that some SFTP clients offer both FTP and SFTP--be sure to select SFTP if you are given a choice.)
The host name to connect to is:
- homepages.nyu.edu
Use your NetID and password to verify your identity. You will be placed in your home directory. If you want to reach your web page files, switch into your /public_html directory.
For additional instructions on how to use SFTP, go to:
I want to upload some large text and image files for my web page. How much space do I have for my files?
Your NYUHome account has a quota of 50 megabytes. Don't forget, though, that all files saved in your account, including files for your web page, will use up some of that quota. Remember to manage your allocated disk space carefully.
In addition to the built-in File Manager, you can also use a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) client to connect to NYUHome.

If you go over your 50MB quota, you will not be able to upload more files. To fix this, you will need to use a SFTP program to remove the larger files. You will not be able to use the built-in File Manager to remove files. See our troubleshooting instructions at:
