"WEBMAIL" PHISHING SCAM TARGETING NYU COMMUNITY
ITS has received reports of a new, sophisticated phishing email requesting that the recipient send his/her username, password, and date of birth to a "webmail.NYU.EDU" email address. The subject line reads "Dear NYU.EDU mail account user."
If you receive this phishing email, do NOT reply to it.
If you received this phishing email and responded with your account information, you should IMMEDIATELY go to start.nyu.edu and change your password. (For instructions, see www.nyu.edu/cgi-bin/its/askits/kbasedetail.pl?doc=NYU0480.)

NYU community members should NEVER REPLY to any email that requests their email login or NYU NetID, password, and date of birth. Instead, they should forward phishing messages to firstname.lastname@example.org. Doing so trains NYU email filters to prevent such types of spam from arriving in inboxes. CONFLICTS BETWEEN WINDOWS DEFENDER & SYMANTEC ENDPOINT PROTECTION
For Windows computers, ITS recommends using both Windows Defender and Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP11). In a few cases, SEP11 may interfere with Windows Defender installation or disable its Real-Time Protection scanning feature. To fix these issues, do the following:
- If you have both programs installed on your computer (Windows XP, Vista, or 7), make sure that Windows Defender hasn't been disabled by SEP11.
- If you have installed SEP11 on your Windows XP computer and are unable to install Windows Defender afterward, you will need to uninstall SEP11, restart your computer, install Windows Defender, and then reinstall SEP11.

Windows Defender is included with Windows Vista and 7. For Windows XP, it can be downloaded free-of-charge from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx. For information on obtaining SEP11, see "Update Your Security Software" in the Reminders section of this issue of Connect-Direct. INCREASING YOUR NYU EMAIL QUOTA
All NYU faculty, staff, and students in degree programs have NYUHome accounts and are initially allotted 250MB of email storage. Should you need more storage, please send email to AskITS@nyu.edu or use the form at http://AskITS.nyu.edu/contactus.
ITS will now routinely increase your email quota, at your request, to 1GB. Depending on the volume of requests, your expanded email quota will be in place within a few business days after receipt of your request.
SCAREWARE: A NEW MALWARE TACTIC
Cyber criminals are adopting new tactics to trick people into believing their computers are infected and that they need to download a variation of recognized security software.
These types of online offers are actually "scareware," i.e., fake antivirus software that is made to look authentic and may even display what appears to be real-time antivirus scanning of the hard drive. In reality, downloading the software could result in viruses, Trojans, and keyloggers being installed on the computer.
Most computers compromised by scareware are the result of individuals clicking on pop-up advertisements while browsing the web. If you encounter these kinds of scareware pop-ups, ITS recommends closing your web browser immediately or shutting down the computer. You should also run a full antivirus scan after taking the aforementioned actions.

A NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING WIKI
NYU ITS High Performance Computing Service (NYU HPC) has created a new HPC Support wiki, providing useful information about HPC resources and their use. You can visit the wiki at http://hpc.nyu.edu.
NYU HPC supports NYU faculty, researchers, and faculty-sponsored students in their research by providing advanced computing technologies and guidance in their use. The new wiki will better enable researchers to take full advantage of HPC services--making them more accessible and easier to use.
UPDATE YOUR SECURITY SOFTWARE!
The most current version of Symantec Endpoint Protection is 11.0.5 and is available for download via the "Ask ITS" area within NYUHome. This software is available for Windows XP, Vista, and 7, in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
For Mac users, version 10.2.3 of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is now available. This is compatible with both Snow Leopard (10.6) and Leopard (10.5). This version is not compatible with OS X Tiger (10.4).
CALL FOR STUDENT NOMINEES: MAX GOLDSTEIN PRIZE
Each spring, ITS awards the Max Goldstein Prize to an NYU undergraduate student who has applied computing in a creative and practical way to improve the academic, cultural, or social life of the NYU community. The prize consists of a cash award of $500; nominations will be accepted from any member of the NYU community. The deadline for nominations is Monday, March 8.
Please send nominations to William Fry, ITS Student Technology Services, at email@example.com. Include the student's full name, school and class year, your relationship to the nominee, and a description or example of the accomplishment(s) that qualify him or her for the prize.
CALL FOR STUDENT NOMINEES: GEORGE SADOWSKY PRIZE
Each spring, ITS awards the George Sadowsky Prize of $500 to a student who exhibits exemplary innovation in using the Internet for community service. Nominations may be sent by Friday, March 19, to Heather Rogers, Office of the CITO, 10 Astor Place, 5th Floor, or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please send a description of the nominee's work/project, contact information (mailing address, phone number, email) for both the student nominee and the nominator, and a description of the relationship of the nominator to the nominee. If a website is involved in the project, please send the website address as well.
SUPPORT & TRAINING
ITS & NYU LIBRARIES CLASSES
ITS and the NYU Libraries offer a variety of free classes that can help you take advantage of the technology and Library resources available to you in support of your research and coursework.
ITS classes (www.nyu.edu/its/classes) include NYU Blackboard training, as well as workshops in the use of the NYURoam wireless network and (in collaboration with the Libraries) statistics and mapping software.
NYURoam Wireless Workshops are held throughout the semester every Wednesday from 4-6pm in the Kimmel Center Second Floor Commuter Lounge. Additional sessions are being offered on Fridays from noon-2pm throughout the month of February. Workshops and training in the use of GIS and statistical mapping packages are offered by the Data Service Studio, an ITS/NYU Libraries facility. In the coming weeks, these include SPSS/PASW (Introductory: Feb. 8, 17, 26; Intermediate: Feb. 23), SAS (Feb. 9), and STATA (Feb. 10, 16), as well as classes in a variety of other research-computing related subjects. DID YOU KNOW?
DETERMINING WHETHER YOU ARE USING 32-BIT OR 64-BIT WINDOWS VISTA
If you're installing new software or troubleshooting a problem on your Windows Vista PC, it's important to know whether it has a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows Vista.
According to the Microsoft knowledgebase:
The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.
The main differences between the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista relate to memory accessibility, memory management, and enhanced security features.
To find out if your computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows Vista, do the following:
- Open System by clicking the Start button.
- Click Control Panel, then System and Maintenance, and then System.
- The system type will appear under System.
