Due to a few recent cases of Sony-manufactured laptop batteries overheating, and in some cases even exploding, both Apple and Dell have issued free battery recalls. The affected batteries may pose a serious fire risk and potentially injure the user. The affected laptops are:

Apple

• 12-inch iBook G4
• 12-inch PowerBook G4
• 15-inch PowerBook G4

Dell

• Latitude
• Precision
• Inspiron
• XPS

Consumers that are affected by the recall are being told to remove the battery immediately and to power the laptop via the AC adapter only.

The Department of Homeland Security has issued an alert to all Windows users to update their computers with the latest Microsoft Windows vulnerability patch. A computer lacking this latest patch could be compromised and remotely controllled by an attacker. It is imperative that this update be applied as soon as possible.

Windows Operating Systems users are encouraged to avoid delay in applying this security patch. Attempts to exploit vulnerabilities in operating systems routinely occur within 24 hours of the release of a security patch. This vulnerability could impact government systems, private industry and critical infrastructure, as well as individual and home users.

Please note that due to network maintenance scheduled for this Friday August 11 from 8pm to midnight, a variety of ITS services, including NYU Forums, the ITS Start page, and a variety of University web servers will be unavailable. For details, see the ITS Status web page.

To enable necessary system maintenance, the ResNet residence hall network will be unavailable from now through August 21st at 5:00pm at all non-Law School residence halls. New ResNet registrations will also be unavailable during this time period. For NYU-NET and Internet access during these periods, NYU community members can use the computers at Bobst Library or the ITS computer labs, as well as NYUHome stations around campus.

ResNet service and new registrations at the Law residence halls (D'Agostino and 240 Mercer) will be unavailable from 9:00am on August 13th through 5:00pm on August 14th. For NYU-NET and Internet access during this period, NYU community members can use the computers at the locations listed in the news item above.
