These setup guides will help you activate your BlackBerry or iPhone. Because instructions can vary from device to device and among wireless carriers, it's important that you rely on the product- and carrier-specific instructions that come with your phone.
While it is possible to use a variety of smart phones to access NYU resources, ITS' mobile support is currently limited to BlackBerry and iPhone. If you own a different brand, it may be possible to use portions of these instructions to configure your phone (details will vary). Check back for additional support in the future.
BlackBerry Setup

- Complete the Register Now process for your BlackBerry by following the manufacturer's instructions here.
- Go to your wireless service provider's BlackBerry Internet Service account page; in the Accessing the BlackBerry Internet Service Website section, click the link for your service provider.
- Click Create New Account.
- Read the BlackBerry Internet Service End User Agreement, and check the box labeled I have read and understand the Legal Terms and Conditions, then click I Agree.
- Enter the personal information number (PIN) and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) or electronic serial number (ESN) for your BlackBerry, then click Continue. Click here for instructions on how to locate the PIN, IMEI, or ESN on your BlackBerry device.
- Enter a user name and password for your BlackBerry account, then click Next. This user name and password is not tied to your NYU NetID and password.
- If the username you choose has already been taken, you must choose a different username. Suggestions will be provided. Once you have chosen an alternative, click Next.
- Your BlackBerry Internet Service account is now set up. You may begin adding email accounts or create a BlackBerry email address.
BlackBerry provides Windows and Mac configuration and management software on an CD which comes with your device or via download from: http://www.blackberry.com/products/software/desktop/index.shtml.
To install the desktop software on a Windows computer:- Start the installation from the CD or by double-clicking the downloaded software file.
- Click Next on the Welcome screen.
- On the Language screen, use the drop-down menu to choose your language (English is default).
- On the License Agreement screen, click Next.
- On the Customer Information screen, enter your name and organization and click Next.
- When prompted, specify a directory in which you wish the software to be installed, or click Next to accept the default location.
- Choose Typical for your Setup Type.
- On Integration Options, choose whether you are using BlackBerry Internet Service (most common) or BlackBerry Enterprise.
- In the Shortcut Installation options, choose whether you want shortcuts added to your desktop and start menu. Click Next.
- Click Install and the installation process will begin. When it is complete, click Finish.
You can now connect the BlackBerry to your computer via a USB cable.
To install the desktop software on a Mac:- Start the installation from the CD or by double-clicking the downloaded software file.
- Double-click to install PocketMac.
- Type password if prompted.
- Click Continue on the Read Me.
- Click Continue on the License and then click Agree.
- Click Install, then Continue to allow the program to restart your computer after installation.
- During the installation you will need to select whether you want an alias on your desktop and if you want to install Lotus Notes support (if you are not sure what Lotus Notes is, click No).
- Click Restart to restart the computer.
You can now connect the BlackBerry to your computer via a USB cable.
To associate the BlackBerry with your computer:- Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and click Options, then Connection Settings.
- In the Connection Settings dialog box, click the Connection drop-down menu and choose the kind of connection you are using (docking cradle or USB cable).
- Click the Detect button.
When you change your NYU password, you will have to manually reflect that change in your BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) account:
- Go to the BlackBerry support page here.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Use the pull-down menu to select your carrier.
- The BlackBerry account welcome screen will appear.
- Enter your NYU NetID in the username field.
Note: If your NetID does not work as the username, contact your service provider. If the phone is owned by NYU, send an email to: its.mobile@nyu.edu. - If you do not remember your password, click the Forgot Password? link. Click here for instructions on using the Forgot Password? function.
- The following page should appear once you've successfully logged in.
- Click the icon under Edit.
- In the dialogue box next to Password, delete your old NYU password and enter the new password. Click Save.
- From the login screen, click Forgot Password?
- If you know your user name, enter it in the User name field and click Request Password. (The user name is typically your NYU NetID.)
- Your password will be sent to the messages folder on your BlackBerry. The icon may vary with different BlackBerry models.
- If you do not know your username, you will need the PIN from your BlackBerry by following the following instructions:
• Select Settings

• Select Options

• Select Status
• Copy down the PIN
- Type PIN into PIN field and click Request Password.
- Your password will be sent to your messages folder on the phone.
iPhone Setup
Click on the bar below to view the instructions.
Upon receipt of your new iPhone, the device will already be activated and ready for immediate use. If your iPhone is not activated, contact ITS Mobile at its.mobile@nyu.edu. Following periodic software updates, the iPhone may require re-activation. To reactivate an iPhone, simply plug the device into any Windows or Mac computer running the iTunes software, and click on the "Sync" button.

Install (or update) iTunes.
To successfully manage your iPhone, you should install the most recent version of iTunes on your computer. The iPhone uses iTunes on both Mac and PC for a number of purposes, including:
- Synchronizing personal organizer data (contacts, calendars, web browser bookmarks)
- Backing up settings and downloaded applications
- Installing new or updated iPhone system software
- Synchronizing and authorizing media (music, videos, images)
For instructions on downloading, installing, or updating iTunes on your PC or Mac, visit Apple's website.
Please note: ITS neither endorses nor prohibits the installation of third-party applications or use of your iPhone as a personal entertainment device, and assumes no responsibility for backup or management of purchased media or applications.
To configure wired data synchronization on PC or Mac:
- Launch the iTunes application on your computer.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the provided cable.
- Click the icon for your iPhone under the Devices list on the left side of the window, then click the Info tab to the top of the screen.
- Check the checkboxes referring to which information you would like to sync (i.e., Address Book contacts, calendars, mail accounts, bookmarks, etc.) You may also have your computer replace information on your phone under the Advanced section.
- When you are finished checking the individual sections that you would like to synchronize, click the Sync or Apply button in the lower right-hand corner of the window.
MobileMe
The MobileMe service provides wireless synchronization for email, contacts, and calendars. It is a paid service that is provided and supported exclusively by Apple.
Contacts
To enable contact synchronization, check the box in the "Contacts" section, then use the pull-down menu to select the application with which you would like your iPhone to sync:

Calendars:
To enable calendar synchronization, check the box in the "Calendars" section. Note that in Windows, you can only sync with Outlook, and on the Macintosh you can only sync with iCal.
- Choose whether to sync all calendars or some calendars by selecting the appropriate radio button.
- To sync all past events, uncheck the box next to Do not sync events older than...
- To sync some past events, specify how many days back the iPhone should synchronize.
Mail Accounts:
The iPhone can connect directly to your NYUHome email account; there is no need to use iTunes to synchronize email data. To learn how to connect your iPhone to NYUHome email, see Configuring Your iPhone to Connect to Your NYU Email, above.
Web Browser:
To keep web browser bookmarks synchronized between your computer and iPhone, check the box in the Web Browser section.
- Windows: Use the pull-down menu to select Internet Explorer or Safari.
- Mac: You may only sync bookmarks with Safari.
Airplane Mode
If you want to disable your networks to conserve power if you are on an airplane (or place that does not allow mobile phone use), you may use Airplane mode to turn off all networks. WiFi (see below) may be enabled while Airplane Mode is on.
- Press the Home button.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the slider next to Airplane Mode to switch between On and Off.
WiFi
When you enter Airplane Mode, WiFi is automatically turned off, but you may manually turn it back on. This is useful if you are in an airplane or hospital that provides WiFi, but it prohibits mobile phone use.
- Press the Home button.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the slider next to Wi-Fi to switch between On and Off.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth allows you to connect to wireless communication headsets. If you do not use a wireless headset, Bluetooth may be safely disabled to conserve power.
- Press the Home button.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the slider next to Bluetooth to switch between On and Off.
GPS
Newer iPhones ship with GPS radios built in. There is no option to manually disable GPS. However, GPS is a passive radio service; it only receives radio signals, and emits no signal. Therefore, it draws a negligible amount of power and will never interfere with nearby electronics.
