ACH / ALLC 2001 - New York University
June 13th - June 16th 2001

General Information

Banks

There is a Citibank on LaGuardia Place between Bleecker and West 3rd Street, and a Chase Manhattan bank on Broadway and 8th Street. Both will change foreign currency and cash traveler's checks.

Post Office

There is an NYU post office with basic services available from 10am - 4pm at La Guardia place. A full service post office is located at Prince Street and Greene Street in SoHo.

Tipping

At most restaurants the gratuity is not included in your bill and is expected. Waiters are often not paid by the hour and depend solely on the tip. For adequate to good service you should leave a 15% to 20% tip.  Check your bill because at a few establishments they do include a tip.  If there is no service at your table (eg if pick up your food yourself) you do not need to leave a tip.  You should however, tip a bartender.
You should also tip a taxi driver between 15% and 20% of the fare.
If you check your coat it is customary to tip the attendant $1.

Health and medical services

We strongly recommend that all visitors bring health insurance, as American medical services can be extremely expensive!
If you need medical assistance, the NYU Health center is located at 726 Broadway, 4th floor.
The nearest pharmacy is Duane Reade, on West 4th at Mercer Street. The nearest hospital emergency room is St Vincents, 7th Avenue at 12th Street.

Safety

New York is as safe as any major city, but you should still take common sense precautions when out and about - don't carry large sums of money with you, or leave valuables in your dorm/hotel room. When out walking, day or night, be aware of your surroundings and those around you. The subway is safe, but be aware of those around you, especially at night. There is an NYPD station at the south side of Washington Square Park, attended during the day.
A security guard is on duty at all times at the Main Building and the Weinstein student dorm. If you have any problems or concerns about safety, please contact a member of the conference staff immediately.
Drug dealers still operate in Washington Square Park, but most of them are now undercover NYPD officers!
