How To Scan Using Adobe Photoshop

Part I : Setting Up

  1. Place document in scanner.
  2. Open Adobe Photoshop.

Part II : Scanning:

  1. Under the File Menu choose IMPORT_Twain Acquire. This will open the scanning software.
  2. Select your dpi (dots per inch). Recommended dpi:
    :: 72 for web or screen use (including power-point slides)
    :: 300 for basic 1 to 1 printing
    :: 300+ for enlarged prints
  3. Click Preview. Wait for scanner to preview.
  4. Use selection tool to choose scanning area on document.
  5. After it has previewed the specific settings / adjustment to settings can be made by clicking on the tool icon. Here you can specify the source material (photo, drawing) for greater clarity, as well as the contrast, etc.

    It is recommended, however, that these things be adjusted once the file has been imported into Photoshop, simply because that program handles such changes in more sophisticated ways.
  6. Click Scan. The image will open as 'Untitled document' in Photoshop.

Part III : Saving the file in Adobe Photoshop :

  1. Save file in desired location and format. Recommended Formats:

    :: For the web - .jpg for photos, Gif for none photo images.
    :: For high quality prints (i.e outputting to the printer) - .tiff or .jpg (.tiff's have more info than .jpg's without the excess layer info of a .psd).
    :: For layered images - .psd only.
