HIGHLIGHT-- Digital Storytelling

Explore some exciting ways that faculty can liven up their classroom teaching. We all know that in order to have any kind of impact on our audiences, we need to tell an interesting story.

In this section are showcased some examples of exciting storytelling. These are picked more for the innovative manner in which they make the subject come alive. Faculty can use some or more of these methods to do the same with their course material. The digital tools are there and available to weave a magical story.

THEBAN MAPPING PROJECT

This is an ambitious project of interest to both Egyptologists and scholars, as well as lay persons, and interactively takes the user through the various tombs in the Valley of the Kings.

Through the use of text, interactive graphics, & audio narrative, the subject is made fascinating. The clean look, warm color scheme, and simple navigation add to its effectiveness.
Check out The Theban Mapping Project.

TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD PROJECT

This is an animated account of the building of the first railroads across America. Using Flash and a split screen design, the top half for a text account, & the bottom half for graphics, this animation moves the story linearly. This is a simple yet effective approach to digital storytelling.

Go to the Transcontinental Railroad Project. Once there, click on the 'Play Animation' button.

ROCKETS

This playful and engaging animation (again in Flash) actually brings a rocket to life on the click of a button. And you will be guided into building one, if so inclined!!

Go to Rockets and click on 'Play animation'

INTERACTIVE PORTRAITS

This is an innovative way to explore a painting, in this particular case, a portrait of George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart.

The painting is broken into hotspots that stand out in color while the rest of the picture fades into gray tone. One can click on the hotspot to zoom in, play an audio introduction and read the text description for that part of the painting.

Go here to the Smithsonian Institute site, & click on "Explore the portrait" once the Flash animation on the page loads.
