NYUHome has a web-based mail client built into it. However, if you prefer, you can use the Mozilla Thunderbird email client to access your NYU email. To do so, follow the instructions below.
Please note that ITS strongly recommends the use of the IMAP mail protocol. With IMAP, you can keep all of your mail on the server, in folders. That way, even if you use Thunderbird at home, a different email program at the office, and the NYUHome web client while on the road, you will always have all of your mail folders available to you!
Configure Thunderbird for Macintosh
- Open Thunderbird, then click on the Tools menu and choose Account Settings.

- Click the Add Account... button, located at the bottom left.

- Choose Email account, then click Continue.

- In the window that opens, do the following (see figure, below):
- Type your full name in the Your Name field.
- Type your NYUHome email address (YourNetID@nyu.edu, e.g., aqe123@nyu.edu) in the Email Address field.
- Click Continue.

- In the next screen, do the following (see figure, below):
- Choose IMAP as the type of incoming server.
- Type mail.nyu.edu in the Incoming Server field.
- Type smtp.nyu.edu in the Outgoing Server field.
- Click Continue.

- Based on what you submitted in step 4, Thunderbird will fill in the next window's fields automatically. Click Continue.

- If you wish, you can change the Account Name in the next window, or leave it as is. Next, click Continue.

- Verify your information on the next screen, then click Done.

- You will be returned to the Account Settings window. Select Server Settings on the left under your account name.
Then, on the right, select SSL under Security Settings and click OK.

- Under the Tools menu, choose Account Settings. In the left pane, click Outgoing Server (SMTP); then, on the right, find the entry for smtp.nyu.edu and click Edit (or Add if the list is empty).
Set Server Name to smtp.nyu.edu, Port to 587, and check the Use name and password box. Enter your NYU NetID in the User Name box. Next to Use secure connection, click the circle for TLS.

Congratulations! Mozilla Thunderbird is now configured to get your mail from NYUHome using IMAP.
Checking Your Mail
- To check your mail, click the Get Mail icon at the top left of the main Thunderbird screen.

- The NYUHome IMAP Server will be contacted and you will be prompted to enter your NYUHome password. Enter it and click OK.
