Configure Outlook 2003 for NYU Email

about security address spam security

NYUHome has a web-based mail client built into it. However, if you prefer, you can use the Outlook 2003 email client to access your NYU email. To do so, follow the instructions below.

Please note that ITS strongly recommends the use of the IMAP mail protocol. With IMAP, you can keep all of your mail on the server, in folders. That way, even if you use Outlook at home, a different email program at the office, and the NYUHome web client while on the road, you will always have all of your mail folders available to you!

Configure Outlook 2003 for Windows

  1. Open Outlook 2003, click on the Tools menu and choose E-mail Accounts...
  2. Select Add a new e-mail account, then click Next.
  3. Choose IMAP for the Server Type, then click Next.
  4. In the window that opens, do the following (see figure, below):
    1. Type your full name in the Your Name field.
    2. Type your NYUHome email address (YourNetID@nyu.edu; e.g., aqe123@nyu.edu) in the E-mail Address field.
    3. Type mail.nyu.edu in the Incoming mail server (IMAP) field.
    4. Type smtp.nyu.edu in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.
    5. Type your NYU NetID (in lowercase) in the User Name field. Leave the password field blank for now.

Click the Outgoing Server tab, and check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. There should a bullet by Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

  6. Click the Advanced tab, and underneath Outgoing Server (SMTP) check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). Change the port number (in the box just above) from 25 (the default) to 465. Underneath Incoming Server (IMAP) check the box net to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). The box next to Incoming Server (IMAP) should automatically change to 993.

You may have to quit and restart Outlook before the new settings will take effect.
  7. In the E-mail Accounts window that is still open, click Next, then click Finish on the next screen.
  8. When prompted, type in your NYUHome password, then click OK.
